Meet your DA candidates:

The Times-Standard has given each candidate a My Word/Op-Ed space:

Allan Dollison/My Word
Élan Firpo/My Word
Maggie Fleming/My Word
Arnie Klein/My Word

My God, the people reading these are going to be shocked. What is this mismanagement of which you speak??? Why, we've never been told of this! Could it be our trusted reporters have let us down? How can this be!

The Times-Standard also has a poll up, asking who you support for DA.

  1. Rose, thank you for linking these. It is well-known by now that I am supporting Elan.

I think all 4 candidates did an excellent job with their My Words.
They were all well-written. Many of these points were brought up by the candidates in the first debate.

They each talked about why they should be elected. They did not attack each other.

They will appeal to different voters. And I think it was very fair of the T-S to give them all a chance to be published at the same time.

  2. Agreed, John.

The common thread is - we have a disaster on our hands, and what the heck are we gonna do about it?

The good news is all four WANT to do something about it.

I don't think you can say the same about Paul - who has had all these YEARS to man up and do it. All you've had is excuses, excuses, excuses. Covered up by the media. And I don't want to say all the media, because Kevin Hoover, in particular, has covered it well and fairly, and there have been other bright spots.

But The Times-Standard, despite the praise they get here for allowing four My-Words, has done a shitty job covering the unfolding disaster. Don't think they were't aware. They were. Even their own endorsements admitted it, as they detailed some of his failings and then shrugged and warranted that, even so, they wanted to give him 'another chance.'

In so doing, they insured that it got worse. And some people, innocent victims, do not get the luxury of another chance.

Now, whoever wins the chance to rebuild the office has a daunting task on their hands. It can be done.

  3. What I don't understand is why these My Word pieces were run 2 1/2 months before the vote? As if anyone is going to remembers them come June.

  4. I sometimes get the impression the reporters think Paul's stepping down, rather than just saying he isn't going to run again. He's still there til January. Whether he's only in the office one day a month til then or not.

To be fair - or maybe just hopeful - the reporters are going to be conducting in depth interviews as we get closer to the election.

In the past we've had articles on who had the coolest haircut. And, or course the obligatory who has the most Facebook LIKES...

It's a good thing they give the candidates a chance to talk about more substantive issues.

  5. @ Anonymous 3:38 p.m. if you cannot be bothered to remember or educate yourself before the vote, you probably are not going to vote.

Debates and op-ed pieces are run for people who actually care to get involved, educate themselves and make an informed decision.

Try that option instead of typing stupid comments all day on blogs sitting in front of your computer to get your fix.

I know actually doing something productive with your time is a novel concept for you.

  6. I have to echo the comment made above. Why is the Times Standard running these My Word pieces so far ahead of the actual vote? It's a valid question. It is a proven fact that 98% of the people who are registered voters don't pay the slightest attention until the absentee ballots show up in their mailbox 30 days out.

  7. Jim, I know you have worked on campaigns. So have I. That does not make you an authority or me on what works. So throwing out statistics like you have the definitive answer that works every time is something no one should do.

People who vote on a regular basis educate themselves in a variety of ways. The Times-Standard is the only daily and other than word restrictions and how often someone gets published, they try and include information.

Why do you have a problem with that? That My Word and printing it all at the same time is a good idea. People get to compare.
