Did the Northern Humboldt Union High School District Board authorize Dana Silvernale to post propaganda under their name? Is she acting in her official capacity? No, she is not.

Dana Silvernale's ◼ Letter to the Editor in the Arcata Eye spouts all the latest radical talking points - with Bank Of America as the hated target du jour. Wittingly or unwittingly, Ms. Silvernale is participating in a plan of attack designed to 'bring down the system.'

Whether she is just parroting words and phrases, or if that is indeed her intent, perhaps she should resign from the school board. Our schools have some issues - injecting poisonous extremist politics into the mix is not going to help solve the problem. And, if her basic understanding of finances is this shallow, perhaps she is not the best person to be involved in making decisions relating to our school's budget.

The PROBLEM, Ms. Silvernale, is the legislators who have spent the state into oblivion, and who show no signs of stopping their spendthrift ways.

Blaming Bank of America is simply a diversion, and one that we cannot afford. A lot of money and effort is going into making sure you get those DUHC talking points you spout - in case you didn't know, here's where it is coming from:

You have every right to your personal opinion, and your personal activism. You do not have the right to speak for the District without authorization.

I am very concerned. Do you endorse bringing down JP Morgan Chase, as is mentioned in that audio? (or Bank of America, which has been substituted as the boogeyman since that caught-on-tape audio was released?) Do you endorse bringing down the financial system? What effect do you think that is going to have on our kid's education? What effect do you think throwing the nation into chaos is going to have on our kid's education? Do you endorse duping kids into not paying their student loans in order to accomplish this?

Do you advocate using students (our children) as your political pawns? Drawing them into Union protests? Using parent conferences to lobby on these political matters?

I demand that you retract your use of the School District in this matter. And I hope the District issues a formal condemnation of this letter of yours.

Ms. Silvernale's letter:

I just deposited $1,100,000 in the Bank of America. That was money that California taxpayers intended for Northern Humboldt High Schools in 2011-2012. It is going to Bank of America in tax subsidies, instead.

$1,100,000 translates into 20 full-time teaching positions, positions the Board has been forced to cut. But that's not all. This year, the State deferred 25 percent of its funding to our schools. That's $800,000. That so-called deferral is now permanent. Next year's deferrals are twice that - 45 percent - bringing the total in cuts and deferments for 2011-2012 to $2.7 million!

Northern Humboldt Union High School District has been drawing on reserves to cover these deferrals, but at the current rate, our reserves will be completely depleted by 2014. And no telling how many more teachers will be laid off.

By not paying their fair share of taxes, wealthy corporations are bankrupting our schools. Bank of America, one of the worst offenders, paid no taxes in 2009.

And if that weren't enough, there's more: The Humboldt County Consortium of Schools banks at Bank of America. they have considered moving to a local bank, but are too short staffed by the budget cuts to manage the transition.

The ultimate irony: Bank of America is profiting from the public schools that it is bankrupting.

The Humboldt Exchange Community Currency Project, a volunteer-run group promoting the use of community currency in exchange for local services, produces the colorful bills, featuring local images created by local artists.

”The overall idea is not to displace U.S. currency, just to offer an alternative currency to meet people's needs,” said Jon Zaglin, the project's business outreach coordinator....

County, Pacific Legal Foundation reach Measure T settlement Measure T: 'Null and void'
The Pacific Legal Foundation announced Monday that it has agreed to a settlement with Humboldt County over the legality of Measure T.

Passed by county voters in 2006, Measure T aimed to ban political contributions from out-of-county corporations to local campaigns. But, the measure quickly came under fire from those who believed it to be unconstitutional.

...Reached Monday, Interim Humboldt County Counsel Wendy Chaitin said the county felt compelled to fight the case because it stemmed from a citizen-passed initiative, despite the fact that many worried from the beginning that the measure may not past constitutional muster.

”The county felt it was necessary to defend Measure T and they did,” Chaitin said. “But, there's a point where you have to balance the reasonable likelihood of winning the lawsuit versus what kind of effort and county funds -- basically taxpayer money -- you want to put toward that effort.”

Illston's initial ruling on the injunction, Chaitin said, plainly showed the proverbial writing was on the wall.

”It was clear from the preliminary injunction ruling that the U.S. District Court Judge Illston, in granting that preliminary injunction, was pretty strong and clear in her language that there were many distinct grounds on which she concluded that Measure T violated the Constitution, both on First and 14th Amendment grounds,” Chaitin said.

Under the terms of the proposed settlement, the county will have to pay $44,000 in Pacific Legal Foundation legal fees, but Chaitin said the total cost of the case for the county is closer to $100,000, not including county staff time.

"John Corbett has always been a slimeball. Once he witnessed someone obviously getting stalked and harassed in the hall outside the courtrooms here in Eureka, usual sort of family court stuff. John Corbett didn't lift a finger; instead he let out this snickering laugh and even made fun of the person who called for the sheriffs to intervene and prevent an outbreak of violence. I know this because I was attending a hearing that morning and I witnessed him behaving like a jackal.

He also ran the Arcata Co-Op into massive amounts of debt in the boondoggle remodeling of their Arcata store in 2000 which almost drove them out of business (the Eureka relocation with all its problems was idyllic by comparison to the massive disruption in Arcata). Their own finance chiefs will tell you that the North Coast Co-Op is neck deep in debt to this day because of Corbett's mismanagement of the Arcata remodel. That's why they had to turn to Arkley to finance the Eureka relocation, because they couldn't increase their debt load. Go ahead, ask 'em.

Corbett also oversaw the blind eye attitude of the air quality board towards the pulp mill, which operated for nearly two years under the Chinese without installation of the necessary scrubbers to cut down on the particulate levels and noxious chemicals released. People got sick because of the arrogant disregard for public safety exhibited by the local air board, which Corbett is the chair of.

Let's not even get started with the McKinleyville CSD board and how Corbett lets the GM run wild acting more like a dictator than like a general manager. That guy made Dan Hauser appear to have a benevolent management style by comparison."

Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap says the judge has ruled against the People of Humboldt County. To which we could add - "AND IN FAVOR OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, Kaitlin!"

☛ TS Federal judge puts injunction on Measure T
A U.S. District Court judge has issued an injunction against the 2006 ballot Measure T, saying it likely violates the First and 14th amendments.

The Humboldt County ballot measure put a ban on political contributions by corporations that are not exclusively local. Mercer Fraser Co. and O&M industries, both based locally but with some of its workforce out of the area, challenged Measure T. Democracy Unlimited, the primary sponsor of the initiative, is defending the measure, saying only natural persons possess civil and political rights, unlike corporations, which are creations of state law.

Judge Susan Illston ruled Monday in San Francisco that Measure T may burden corporations' First Amendment right to make political expenditures and campaign contributions, and doesn't allow corporations to form segregated funds. But even if it did, Illston wrote, it may still be unconstitutional because it regulates non-local corporations more stringently than non-local incorporated unions.

Measure T also likely violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment, Illston wrote, because it burdens corporations' right to engage in political expression, but is not narrowly tailored.

I'm thinking "Democracy Unlimited" is actually a good name for Kaitlin's group since she seems to believe in the tyranny of the majority as opposed to the Constitution and the Rule of Law. The Constitution is an impediment to the "Democracy Unlimited" folks, which is one reason why her use of the Suffragette example is so offensive.

Now, Kaitlin - how much is this costing us again?
