The KHUM DA Debate

Or, the Reporters' "ME ME ME" Forum. (Reporters asked the questions tonight)

Serious issues, like are you going to talk to US? Prosecute US, or support Gag orders.... and what about that art at HSU? Little to no indication that they care or understand the problems in the DA's Office.

The Candidates valiantly answered the questions, of course they care about free speech.

Look, the controversy over some piece of art at HSU may be near and dear to the Lumberjack reporter's heart, but it doesn't have a thing to do with the DA's Office.

As for PRESS RELEASES and press relations - there were some good points made - it's not that the questions are BAD questions, they are just so self-centered it's disappointing. With all the problems in the DA's office, insufficient communication with reporters is way down on the list.

Allan Dollison correctly pointed out the flurry of press releases that went out to support Gallegos' re-election and the dearth since. There were some good points made, but other answers mostly missed the boat when it comes to the press.

The DA is the liaison to the press. NOT the Deputy DA's.

It's the DA's job. the DA is expected to be knowledgeable about the cases, know how to deal with the media, and DO it - not pass it off to prosecutors who have no desire to interact with the media, and no knowledge how to do so. You get people popping off, and you're gonna get yourself sued, and/or lose cases. The Deputy DA's should not be talking to the media bout the cases. I've been pointing this out for years, as Paul abdicated his responsibility.

Sigh.

On the plus side, since it wasn't a call in forum, we didn't get Sara the Dog's standing question "What do you most admire about Paul Gallegos?" Which is too bad really because that was really backfiring, as the poor candidates struggled to come up with something, it became increasingly apparent that Paul's fan club has closed its doors.

...The only light hearted moments in the debate were when the wind blew the name cards off the table for each candidate. While it was an equal opportunity wind; it did pick on the men first. Also the mike sputtered and finally failed. These two technical difficulties brought a smile and exchange from all four candidates where the people overruled the candidates....The debate will be aired on Access Humboldt so you can watch for yourself....

Ocean West Senior Village Candidate Forum

◼ Arnie Klein for Humboldt County District Attorney 2014: A big thank you to Ocean West Senior Village for hosting Friday evenings forum. A lot of important questions were asked and I met some great people.

I almost missed this one. Thought it was an earlier article, the title was so similar

In a rapid-fire debate this afternoon, Humboldt County’s four district attorney candidates took turns addressing complex issues in one-minute sound bites, and they found time to take a few swipes at each other.

The 45-minute debate, which was hosted by Eureka Rotary Club and moderated by the League of Women Voters, touched on some of the usual hot-button topics, including marijuana legalization, homelessness, public safety realignment and campaign donations. And while the differences between candidates were often more about style than substance, there was a distinct feistiness in the air, with candidates looking to poke at each other’s perceived weak spots.

KGOE CANDIDATES FORUM TO AIR

◼ On KGOE 1480 AM at 3:00 pm Friday and at 4:00 pm on Saturday just after ABC News at the top of the hour. It runs without commercial interruptions.

Due to a minor illness, Arnie Klein is taking a 48-hour sabbatical.

◼ Arnie Klein for Humboldt County District Attorney 2014 He regrets missing the League of Women Voters candidate forum and tonight’s scheduled KMUD interview with Bonnie Blackberry. Mr. Klein needs to make sure he is well for Thursday, because his priority is assisting the family of Mr. Anderson-Jordet. For this reason, he is putting the campaign on the back burner until Friday morning. Mr. Klein will be at the Humboldt County Courthouse on Thursday at 2 p.m. to ask the judge to set aside the plea.

Earlier: The facts of this case do not support the plea bargain of involuntary manslaughter that the DA's Office arranged. The victim's family has asked me to represent them on Thursday with an impact statement. I encourage you to come to the hearing. ◼ Community Encouraged to Come to Ferrer Sentencing Hearing

For concerned citizens who want to attend the hearing, the sentencing is scheduled for April 3 on the 2 p.m. calendar at the Humboldt County Courthouse, 825 5th St, Eureka, in Judge Joyce Hinrichs’s courtroom.

Tom Sebourn: 3 Out Of 4 Candidates At Trinidad Forum

3 of the 4 candidates vying for the open seat being vacated by District Attorney Paul Gallegos made the trek to Trinidad Town Hall and were pleasantly greeted by beverages, Hors d' oeuvures and a nice crowd. Candidate Arnie Klein couldn't make it due to the flu. I hope he gets well soon.

The crowd was encouraged to to write questions on a card and those were used in the forum. I asked if any of them believed that being homeless should be illegal or a crime and why. Allan Dollison, Elan Firpo and Maggie Fleming all said that not only did they not believe that homelessness should not be a crime, all three argued that homeless people were often and disproportionally victims of crime.

I'm going to be producing a forum with, hopefully all 4 candidates for DA for KGOE AM 1480. We will be recording it on April 10th and I would like to invite anyone that lives in Humboldt County to submit questions for us to ask the candidates. You can just leave your questions in the comments section of this (Tom's) blog and I still allow anonymous posts so feel free to ask away.

We have a great bunch of candidates this time around so this race is anything but certain for any of the them. Lucky for us, there are going to be many chances for people to see, read about or hear from the candidates before the June runoff. I assume a runoff but if one candidate get more that 50% of the vote, from what I understand, they could wrap it up early. That just doesn't seem likely with this great bunch of candidates and I'm expecting it to go all the way to November. If I have that part wrong about the way this election will work, straighten me out in the comment section. (at Tom's blog, or here in the comments.)

◼ Candidates Spar at first DA Debate - Thadeus Greenson/The Journal

The candidates — Deputy District Attorney Elan Firpo and former prosecutors Allan Dollison, Maggie Fleming and Arnie Klein — spent the better part of two hours in the Eureka Veterans Building, answering questions composed by the hosting Humboldt Tea Party Patriots. The evening featured a number of lively responses touching an array of issues. If there was an underlying theme of the evening, however, it was that the district attorney’s office is currently mismanaged and woefully underfunded, leaving prosecutors overworked and often ill prepared....

The full debate is set to air on Access Humboldt in the coming weeks. If you missed it, don’t fret: the candidates are set to again lock horns March 20 at 7 p.m. in a debate sponsored by KHSU, the Mad River Union, the Arcata Police Officers Association and the Arcata High School Pepperbox newspaper that will be aired live on KHSU.

The Fortuna Fire Dept. is thinking of holding a community candidate forum. I have agreed to get in touch with the candidates to help facilitate setting it up.

They'd like to know which days candidates have available, so that they can plan a date - the facility is open evenings on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
