A compelling read: Robert Durst's Ghost

I was surprised to see this picture of the house in Trinidad. I knew he lived in Trinidad but didn't know WHERE. It's a beautiful house. The realtor said the guy who lived here before had turned the whole upper story into one room, so it wasn't practical for a family. No mention we made of this central character. Where he lived, and some other interesting points. See what you take from it. Why did he hang around low rent areas and soup kitchens? Your opinion...

His first wife, Kathleen Durst, disappeared in 1982. In 1999 that case was reopened and he was sought for questioning. Police also wanted to interview him regarding the murder Christmas Eve 2000 of his longtime friend, Susan Berman, in Los Angeles. Berman was the daughter of a mobster who made her living writing about organized crime.

In October 2001 he was arrested in Galveston, Texas -- but not for killing Berman or his former spouse. Instead, he was charged with the murder of his 71-year-old neighbor, whose hacked up corpse had been found by fishermen in Galveston Bay. He was released on bail the following day and disappeared. Not long afterward, he was seen at a campground near the Humboldt-Trinity county line. A month later he was arrested for allegedly shoplifting in a small town in Pennsylvania, even though he had $500 in cash on him. He was returned to Texas to face trial and, well, you know the outcome.

Those distressed by the verdict can take some solace in the knowledge that Durst is still a suspect in the other murder cases.

I wasn't about to question his authority in this area.

What seemed unreal at that moment would be obvious to anyone familiar with the name Robert Durst. Here was a man who had decapitated his neighbor and dismembered the body, and now he was discussing, without displaying the faintest hint of irony, the heft of a human head—his own. The neighbor's head was still missing.

As was Durst's first wife, Kathleen, whose body has never been found.

And Durst is the prime suspect in the shooting death of his best friend and confidante, crime writer Susan Berman....

This week in Plea Deals: Trinidad stabbing defendant gets a year in jail and five years probation for the January stabbing death of Jesse Alvin Ruiz

Judge Marilyn Miles said she was following the recommendation of the plea agreement when she handed down the sentence. Miles ordered Morrow to pay Ruiz's family $4,200 in restitution. He faces up to 11 years in prison if he violates the terms of his probation....

Public defender Gregory Elvine-Kreis said Morrow was defending himself and what happened “will haunt him and Ruiz's family for the rest of their lives.”

”My client would like to apologize for the family's loss,” Elvine-Kreis said. “He's been nothing but forthright with police officers and remorseful, repeating 'I stabbed him, I stabbed him,' as soon as they arrived. This was a story of self-defense. My client was attacked. He was challenged to a fight and there was damage done to his trailer.”

What do you think? No real word here on what he pled to... If it was self defense, that's a harsh sentence. If not, it's awful light.

Tom Sebourn: 3 Out Of 4 Candidates At Trinidad Forum

3 of the 4 candidates vying for the open seat being vacated by District Attorney Paul Gallegos made the trek to Trinidad Town Hall and were pleasantly greeted by beverages, Hors d' oeuvures and a nice crowd. Candidate Arnie Klein couldn't make it due to the flu. I hope he gets well soon.

The crowd was encouraged to to write questions on a card and those were used in the forum. I asked if any of them believed that being homeless should be illegal or a crime and why. Allan Dollison, Elan Firpo and Maggie Fleming all said that not only did they not believe that homelessness should not be a crime, all three argued that homeless people were often and disproportionally victims of crime.

I'm going to be producing a forum with, hopefully all 4 candidates for DA for KGOE AM 1480. We will be recording it on April 10th and I would like to invite anyone that lives in Humboldt County to submit questions for us to ask the candidates. You can just leave your questions in the comments section of this (Tom's) blog and I still allow anonymous posts so feel free to ask away.

We have a great bunch of candidates this time around so this race is anything but certain for any of the them. Lucky for us, there are going to be many chances for people to see, read about or hear from the candidates before the June runoff. I assume a runoff but if one candidate get more that 50% of the vote, from what I understand, they could wrap it up early. That just doesn't seem likely with this great bunch of candidates and I'm expecting it to go all the way to November. If I have that part wrong about the way this election will work, straighten me out in the comment section. (at Tom's blog, or here in the comments.)

Morrow pleads guilty to Trinidad fatal stabbing

◼ The man accused of fatally stabbing a 24-year-old at a Trinidad RV Park, Larry Morrow, has plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter. - Lashay WesleyKIEM-TV News

On Thursday in court, Morrow plead guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter. He is accused of stabbing and killing Jessie Ruiz multiple times after a fight between both men. The incident happened at Hidden Creek RV park in Trinidad in January.

Morrow will appear in court for his sentencing on May 1st.

(Paul Gallegos) exhibits a limited understanding of how things are done in the department" Gallegos "lacks the global perspective needed to keep the department operating efficiently," and quotes an unnamed staff member as saying, "The D.A. (Paul Gallegos) does not fully understand the functionality of many of the things we do here" - Years later, in his own words: "I’m not an administrator, they didn’t elect me to be an administrator, they elected me to make sure this office runs..."

CASE TOSSED The district attorney misrepresented the law and failed to provide evidence of former Eureka Police Chief David Douglas' and Lt. Tony Zanotti's innocence during a criminal grand jury inquiry into the 2006 shooting death of Cheri Lyn Moore, defense attorneys argued in court documents filed Thursday... ”Our judicial system stands as a real and necessary check on the grand jury indictment process,” one of the documents states. “This court has the authority and the means by which to halt this prosecution, which is justified neither by the undisputed facts, nor by the law.”

Gallegos has taken what was "arguably the state's best small DA's office, with a cutting edge CAST program that "trained the trainers"... into a bunch of time serving bureaucratic wannabee brown nosers, lightly sprinkled with a couple of earnest learners who are sure to split as soon as possible.

One weeps for Max Cardoza who won Angellel, and for Maggie Fleming who won so many impossible victories. Mired in Humboldt for personal reasons, they have to suffer the ignominy of working for Paul, with Yougo, yes, yougo who has freed more people as a prosecutor than he did as a defense attorney. Gallegos has answers for everything. I’ve never met anyone whose answers came so quickly, with such polish - except about his law school(s). He likely sounded the same way when promising to get prosecutors off their anachronistic “at will” status and onto civil service status. It never happened. Indeed, he told them, “Disloyalty will not be tolerated” – a real morale builder.

★ Note the difference between what he SAID, and what he DOES..."...So what are these issues? Top on Gallegos' list is the proliferation of "garbage cases," small-time crimes and overcharged cases that he said are clogging up the court system.

Garbage cases, said Gallegos, come in two forms: Cases that would lose if actually brought to trial and cases that are overcharged for the crimes committed. The idea behind filing both kinds of garbage, he said, is to get the defendant to plead guilty, netting a conviction without having to go into court.

Again, the IRONY is astounding! Look at what he SAYS, and then think about what he DOES! "Probably 95 percent of the cases that are filed plead guilty. In fact, there are a lot of cases that are filed on the assumption they will plead guilty, because of the time and expense involved in defending them. But these cases shouldn't even be filed in the first place, because if they were challenged, they would lose," Gallegos said. Better yet: If they weren't filed at all, it would save the county time and money...." North Coast Journal 2/21/02 Too bad he didn't take his own advice.
