Yes, most orgs use children to prove their non-profit bona-fides. They conduct 'educational' activities, you see. And it will be detailed in their filings.
They don't tell you that they're using you. Just like they didn't tell anyone they were getting a significant sum per child per man hour for pulling the accursed grass.
Kids thought they were getting a field trip to the beach, then found out they were there to do the work adults didn't want to do. And someone kept the money. None went to the schools, did it? None went to the kids, did it?
It's been going on for years. And the adults leave feeling so fulfilled. Look at all the good they've done.

Jack Nounnan, an activist associated with the Occupy group, said they've had some problems with a few of the homeless residents that gather there but that none of the core people of the Occupy group have harassed anyone.
”There's a couple of people who are definitely mentally ill, and sometimes they scream,” Nounnan said. “We've never seen any of them accost anybody going into the building.”

Richardson Grove Action Now member Kim Starr said companies should be aware of the risks associated with the project.
”Any involvement by your company will bring you public notoriety -- a PR nightmare,” the letter states. “We wish to warn you that no matter what Caltrans claims the project will cost, it will cost you MORE -- because the public does not want it.”
One letter recipient, who wished to remain anonymous fearing retaliation, said the Federal Bureau of Investigation recently contacted the company regarding the letter, investigating the group for possible eco-terrorism. The businessman, who said the letter was sent out to at least four other contractors, said the anticipation of disruption will mean a higher bid price for Caltrans to cover extra security or equipment damage -- essentially more cost for the state.

Right now, Humboldt County, California, is home to some of the last remaining old-growth redwoods in the world. Many of Richardson Grove State Park’s trees have survived more than 1,000 years.
But as soon as July 1, Humboldt’s old-growth stands could be destroyed by an unnecessary CalTrans construction project to widen and “re-align” Highway 101 -- against the best interests of Humboldt County and California.
That’s why Aliana Lee Knapp-Prasek, who lives just 10 miles from the location of the proposed project, started a Change.org petition calling on Governor Jerry Brown and CalTrans to stop the project and protect Richardson Grove State Park’s irreplaceable trees.
These trees are integral to the park’s habitat -- a haven for endangered species like the northern spotted owl -- and represent an important part of California’s natural heritage.
Even CalTrans admits that “adverse effects to old-growth trees may be a significant impact to this unique natural community.”
Yet CalTrans plans to destroy 40 trees directly, and its overall effect will be even greater. More than 70 old-growth trees will be affected as CalTrans cuts through or paves over roots and compacts hundreds of cubic yards of soil in the area.
CalTrans claims the project will facilitate “goods movement” and make transportation safer, but large trucks already use the road without problems.
In fact, widening the road and subsequently increasing the speed limit will just make it harder for local truckers to compete with bigger businesses -- and make Highway 101 more dangerous.
On Tuesday, Aliana and other local residents will deliver a printed version of their Change.org petition to Governor Brown.
Add your name to help Aliana and other residents gather the 12,750 signatures they need to make the printed petition’s length the same as the height of the tallest tree in the park -- 340 feet -- and show Governor Brown how many of us care about saving one of the last stands of old-growth redwoods in the world:

You're not allowed to use your school board title to spout DUHC talking points, Ms. Silvernale.
Did the Northern Humboldt Union High School District Board authorize Dana Silvernale to post propaganda under their name? Is she acting in her official capacity? No, she is not.
Dana Silvernale's ◼ Letter to the Editor in the Arcata Eye spouts all the latest radical talking points - with Bank Of America as the hated target du jour. Wittingly or unwittingly, Ms. Silvernale is participating in a plan of attack designed to 'bring down the system.'
Whether she is just parroting words and phrases, or if that is indeed her intent, perhaps she should resign from the school board. Our schools have some issues - injecting poisonous extremist politics into the mix is not going to help solve the problem. And, if her basic understanding of finances is this shallow, perhaps she is not the best person to be involved in making decisions relating to our school's budget.
The PROBLEM, Ms. Silvernale, is the legislators who have spent the state into oblivion, and who show no signs of stopping their spendthrift ways.
Blaming Bank of America is simply a diversion, and one that we cannot afford. A lot of money and effort is going into making sure you get those DUHC talking points you spout - in case you didn't know, here's where it is coming from:

You have every right to your personal opinion, and your personal activism. You do not have the right to speak for the District without authorization.
I am very concerned. Do you endorse bringing down JP Morgan Chase, as is mentioned in that audio? (or Bank of America, which has been substituted as the boogeyman since that caught-on-tape audio was released?) Do you endorse bringing down the financial system? What effect do you think that is going to have on our kid's education? What effect do you think throwing the nation into chaos is going to have on our kid's education? Do you endorse duping kids into not paying their student loans in order to accomplish this?
Do you advocate using students (our children) as your political pawns? Drawing them into Union protests? Using parent conferences to lobby on these political matters?
I demand that you retract your use of the School District in this matter. And I hope the District issues a formal condemnation of this letter of yours.

Ms. Silvernale's letter:
I just deposited $1,100,000 in the Bank of America. That was money that California taxpayers intended for Northern Humboldt High Schools in 2011-2012. It is going to Bank of America in tax subsidies, instead.
$1,100,000 translates into 20 full-time teaching positions, positions the Board has been forced to cut. But that's not all. This year, the State deferred 25 percent of its funding to our schools. That's $800,000. That so-called deferral is now permanent. Next year's deferrals are twice that - 45 percent - bringing the total in cuts and deferments for 2011-2012 to $2.7 million!
Northern Humboldt Union High School District has been drawing on reserves to cover these deferrals, but at the current rate, our reserves will be completely depleted by 2014. And no telling how many more teachers will be laid off.
By not paying their fair share of taxes, wealthy corporations are bankrupting our schools. Bank of America, one of the worst offenders, paid no taxes in 2009.
And if that weren't enough, there's more: The Humboldt County Consortium of Schools banks at Bank of America. they have considered moving to a local bank, but are too short staffed by the budget cuts to manage the transition.
The ultimate irony: Bank of America is profiting from the public schools that it is bankrupting.

Many of us are hard-working people and we've been getting almost no credit for that. The criticism that it's our fault that the green religion hasn't spread more universally is a tribal defense of the green ego. Finally, the authors also perform a one-sentence autopsy of the environmental movement:
What killed it was neither our essay, nor fossil-funded skeptics, nor this or that tactical failing by green leaders or Democratic politicians. Rather, environmentalism died of old age.

The Mirror hits the bigtime

...What might a real journalist do – one who wasn’t obviously biased towards Eco-Activists? For starters, take another look at who actually is named in the lawsuit: the largest producers of oil supplements. Why? Try to harm the biggest retailers and manufacturers and you harm the majority of the industry’s sales. Where’s the reporting on this angle? Non-existent.
How about the angle that only ten supplements were tested by the plaintiffs out of the hundreds on the market? Why hasn’t any reporter asked about the testing methods? What methods were used? What standards did they conform to?
Who exactly is the plaintiff – Mateel Environmental Justice Foundation? At least we have some intrepid bloggers who investigated exactly the kind of shady outfit Mateel is – one that makes profits from frivolous lawsuit settlements on the backs on the working people of America. As the Humboldt Mirror blog points out:
Mateel settled 39 lawsuits in 2008 for over $1.7 million….but it’s not just warning labels, product reformulations and excessive attorneys fees that Mateel is after. Through Prop. 65 lawsuit settlements, Mateel also pilfered … “other distributions” that was handed over to other environmental groups.
Oh, now the fact that the largest (read: deepest pockets) in the supplement industry got sued makes a little more sense, doesn’t it?
How’s that for real reporting?
Go back and look at all those articles you just Googled. Did any mainstream media outlet cover Mateel’s strategy? If you said “no”, then you win a pitchfork to help shove the PCB Boogeyman back in his closet.
The title is wrong, though - they don't save the fishes, they rake in the big bucks.

District Attorney Paul Gallegos holds press conference
District Attorney Paul Gallegos is filing with the County Elections Office to declare his candidacy for the Humboldt County District Attorney race. A press conference will held on Friday, March 5th at 12:30pm. Former Assemblymember Patty Berg will be announcing the candidate. The public is welcome to attend.
Purpose: press conference announcement
When: Friday, March 5th at 12:30pm.
Where: 321 Third Street, Old Town Eureka
Family, friends and supporters are all invited to the new campaign headquarters as he makes his announcement at the press conference and then invited back at 5:30 that evening for the Grand Opening Celebration.
Paul Gallegos came into office promising justice for all and has not wavered from that commitment. Now, seven years into his term, he has achieved more than he thought possible, bringing a refreshing change to the District Attorney’s office along with a decline in violent crime.
Paul Gallegos is proud of what he has achieved over this period. He has stood up for all of Humboldt County and maintains his commitment of “justice for all.”

"Progressive" Power Plans
◼ ACORN tactics revealed in discovered documents
Investigators found computers, hard drives, documents, registration forms, I-9 employment information and boxes with return addresses to ACORN’s New Orleans home office, as well as a regional IRS office last October.
Oklahoma Watchdog now has many of the documents...
ACORN, which receives millions in federal dollars for voter registration, cannot legally support one party. However, internal documents show ACORN “targeted” state legislative districts in 2007 and 2008, leading up to the presidential election.
A “Power Plan” document begins: “Oklahoma ACORN has been virtually non-existent since its glory days in Tulsa, over 20 years ago. 2007 is Year Zero.”
It continues with a five-year plan to obtain “power”:
“Therefore, the route to power is twofold: First, build powerful city organizations in Oklahoma City and Tulsa that can control these municipalities. Second, become an influential organization by shaping a handful of strategic legislative districts that, by themselves, can change who controls the state legislature.”
“(W)e will be seen as the force that is making Oklahoma a progressive state in the way that it was 100 years ago.”
“By using this power to win significant changes for working people, by the end of our 5 years, we will have legitimized the progressive takeover of the statehouse and head into 2012 with a real possibility of changing what Oklahomans look for and expect out of their Congressional delegation.”
...Those internal documents include a sheet titled “Canvass recruitment rap,” a “script,” directed towards ACORN activists in Houston which says: “Hi, my name is ____. We are hiring Outreach Workers to remind people to get out and vote for Barack Obama in the upcoming election. One of our team members spoke to you today and you signed up for our intake tomorrow. You are interested in working with us on this important election, correct?”
It continues: “We’re hiring for people to go door to door talking to registered voters in Houston to get out the vote for Barack.”...

Investigators found computers, hard drives, documents, registration forms, I-9 employment information and boxes with return addresses to ACORN’s New Orleans home office, as well as a regional IRS office last October.

ACORN, which receives millions in federal dollars for voter registration, cannot legally support one party. However, internal documents show ACORN “targeted” state legislative districts in 2007 and 2008, leading up to the presidential election.
A “Power Plan” document begins: “Oklahoma ACORN has been virtually non-existent since its glory days in Tulsa, over 20 years ago. 2007 is Year Zero.”
It continues with a five-year plan to obtain “power”:
“Therefore, the route to power is twofold: First, build powerful city organizations in Oklahoma City and Tulsa that can control these municipalities. Second, become an influential organization by shaping a handful of strategic legislative districts that, by themselves, can change who controls the state legislature.”
“(W)e will be seen as the force that is making Oklahoma a progressive state in the way that it was 100 years ago.”
“By using this power to win significant changes for working people, by the end of our 5 years, we will have legitimized the progressive takeover of the statehouse and head into 2012 with a real possibility of changing what Oklahomans look for and expect out of their Congressional delegation.”
...Those internal documents include a sheet titled “Canvass recruitment rap,” a “script,” directed towards ACORN activists in Houston which says: “Hi, my name is ____. We are hiring Outreach Workers to remind people to get out and vote for Barack Obama in the upcoming election. One of our team members spoke to you today and you signed up for our intake tomorrow. You are interested in working with us on this important election, correct?”
It continues: “We’re hiring for people to go door to door talking to registered voters in Houston to get out the vote for Barack.”...

Suit targets water quality enforcement
The groups, which include the Sierra Club, the Environmental Protection Information Center, and the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations, claim the State Water Resources Control Board and the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board have violated state law by allowing delays in enforcing water quality standards.
They want the agencies to draft enforceable standards on how much sediment can be allowed in streams and how warm streams are allowed to get from land uses like logging, mining, building and grazing. ...

With the continuously bleak predictions for our nation's economy, a group of local consumers is urging the community to invest in itself through paper currency that can only be used in Humboldt County.
The Humboldt Exchange Community Currency Project, a volunteer-run group promoting the use of community currency in exchange for local services, produces the colorful bills, featuring local images created by local artists.
”The overall idea is not to displace U.S. currency, just to offer an alternative currency to meet people's needs,” said Jon Zaglin, the project's business outreach coordinator....
But can you pay for your pancake breakfast with it?

Measure J, passed in November with 57 percent of the vote. It prohibits military recruiting of minors within city limits.
Tuesday, City Attorney Sheryl Schaffner announced that the city had received a letter from the U.S. Department of Justice announcing its intent to file a lawsuit challenging the measure.
Arcata's version of the act, Measure F, also garnered a letter of pending legal action from the feds, but Mayor Mark Wheetley said the council has yet to decide whether to defend the act because City Attorney Nancy Diamond is currently out of town.
Within days of receiving the notice of pending legal action, the Eureka City Council opted to defend Measure J, but not at any cost. In fact, Schaffner said the council stipulated that the Schaffner's office will have to fight the case with no additional city resources.
”The city has no legal obligation to defend it, but the council feels an ethical obligation to put up a defense within their abilities out of respect for the 57 percent of the voters in the city that voted for it,” Schaffner said, adding that the case is now likely to dominate her time. “It means other things don't get done, and the council understands that the community will have to understand that too. That's the nature of intense litigation -- you just have to drop whatever else you're doing.”
