  1. Who is John Chiv and why should I care what he thinks? Serious question. He just seems like another blogger.

  2. John is the person who has had the most breaking news regarding the DA's race - if you want to stay up on what's happening, add him to your blog list. I link some of it here, but there's lots more, involving other races and goings on about town.

  3. Right. Just because john chiv is a blogger doesn't mean he is a political analyst. So who cares who he is going to vote for. If people had the time to blog all instead of working, they too could have up to the minute Intel. I think I will do my own research. Besides anyone that supports firpo who has no experience, should not be taken seriously.

  5. OMG, this is huge and totally unexpected. Thanks for the link Rose.

sarcasm of course, it was pretty clear Either Firpo or Klien would be his choice. Newsflash! Firpo or Klien will be who you end up endorsing too. My money is on Firpo. I still don't understand the politics behind the DA completely, I just know it exists.

My greatest concern as I think all candidates (minus Klien) would be competent is who would be would would not be afraid to prosecute environmental laws and be extra tough in vigilantism as that seems to be a thing now.

    1. Liberal jon you obviously did not read my analysis of the DA's race which you don't have to but do not then assume who my choices are and why.

Had you read my analysis, you would have noted my choices were Maggie and Elan. You do not know me and saying I would endorse Klein shows you have no clue about this office or who leans where and why.

You make your pick based on whoever is radically left and who certain people support. I have supported candidates that are democrats, dts and republican.

For you just the D besides a name is a qualifier.

In this DAs race there are some interesting alliances. Do not assume who would win. I never do even about a candidate I endorse.

You see Jon in a free country not only candidates that meet your defintion of who is a democrat get to run.
Qualified candidates get to run, and voters make choices. I have a lot of respect for Maggie and know her better than you do.

And all of you in an uproar Rose links information from my blog, is it because Rose and I actually report news or because we wont have the same views you do?

Its easy to pontificate personal opinions. Rose and I put in our free time to actually provide information.

John, are you employed? You appear to have alot of free time on your hands these days.

    3. Denise who are you to question whether I am. I have a flexible schedule and I can chose to what to do with my free time?

What do you do Denise and who is paying you to discredit me? See jnsinuations like that are made mostly by progressives with an agenda. Don't you dare make libelious statements with no proof.

At least you had the guts to sign your name. What liars are afraid of is the truth. As for free time, there seems to be a lot of that going around by people like you who feel the need to come here and attack me?

I dont know you Denise so what is the

motivation? Now you think its easy to bait me? Keep this tactic going and see how well it works for you?

John took a simple question and turned it into an awkward temper tantrum. Says alot about your character. I'll leave it at that- good day

  6. A. Because I link to John's reports, it is important that John's declaration of endorsement be noted. You can draw your own conclusions about the candidates, and whether or not anyone's endorsement matters - be it Sheriff's orgs, Ken Miller's ex, or even 'Liberal Jon.'

    B. 'Liberal Jon.' You have ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE what you are talking about. And your comment above just further drives that point home. Don't presume to speak for me.

The filing period for this race has not closed. For all you know there could be four more people in the race by the time it does.

All four candidates here have their strengths and the weaknesses. Even so - all four would be an improvement over the astounding mismanagement you have seen over the incumbent's tenure.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Oh - and 9;03 - there's no 'screening' here - if there was, you'd see the message that 'comments are moderated', or 'moderation is enabled.'

If you're capable of posting a comment, your comment will go through. In the old days, I used to let all comments stand. Anymore, 99% of them do, but a few assholes do get their comments deleted after they've made it though. Let's hope you are not one of those, Unless you're the guy who wants to post gibberish about religion, your comments should all be here, unless you made a mistake or there was a Blogger glitch.

  8. It's pretty obvious from reading this blog to tell who the real asshole is Rose

  9. You are right. I really don't understand what the voters are asked to vote for in this race. Unfortunately your analysis is not helping. The only thing that is helping me is who is endorsing whom and right now most people I trust the most have endorsed Maggie. Julie Fulkerson's and John Woolley's endorsement of Elan adds a little confusion.

As I said from the start. I'm open to influence in this race - including from conservatives. If/when you endorse and you make a good pitch for your candidate I'm going to listen. I'm a law and order and fairness guy. Crimes should be prosecuted - all the obvious ones that we all would agree on, but also, importantly those stemming from our illicit drug trade too. As an environmentalist, this trade is a disaster for our environs.

"Don't presume to speak for me"

I'm not speaking for you Rose, it's a prediction. We'll see how it turns out.

It's pretty clear how this election is going from the endorsements or the lack of endorsements on the candidates' web pages. Ultimately the voters will decide, but one doesn't have to be a genius to take public information and make some predictions based on an understanding of politics. We'll see. If I'm wrong Rose, I'll buy you a hot fudge sunday. Here are my predictions - you will endorse Firpo or Klein, Maggie will end up winning in November. Just an educated guess based on early endorsements available on the candidate web sites. Again, we'll see.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Fair enough, Jon. You make some good points.

But bear in mind - people who decide to run for office are not necessarily web-savvy. They don't start out with a war chest to enable them to hire designers right off the bat. They don't necessarily use Facebook, but they find themselves thrown into a whole new world. They not only have to get up and running in an unfamiliar environment, but they have to look good.

They're in the early stages - remember, the filing period hasn't even closed yet. They're having to ask for money (one of the most painful things they can do), they're having to ask for endorsements, and people aren't necessarily ready to make a choice given that - again - the filing period hasn't even closed yet.

And - even if they get the endorsements, they might NOT yet be on the websites because, well, those are more work, yet, and they're either trying to do it themselves, or with volunteer help.

That's the REAL grassroots, Jon. It's messy. It's not all polished like a TV show. But it is sincere.

This is going to be a long protracted experience - for at least two of them. Let it play out.

  11. Hey Liberal John,

As you know, we have our political differences, but I think we’ve always had respectful conversations. I’d encourage you to sit down and have coffee with Elan some time. I’d be happy to arrange it. You might find that the reason many of your liberal friends are supporting Elan is because they really don’t want to make this race partisan. Our chief law enforcement officer shouldn’t be beholden to ANY group and Elan’s belief in true democracy, free from influence, appeals to a lot of people on both sides. Plus, a lot of people would prefer not to be in lockstep with any group, myself included. We’d rather support the best candidate. Maybe you’ve noticed, but having “D” behind your name means about as much as having an “R” behind your name. Blindly supporting candidates simply because they call themselves Democrats doesn’t seem to have served the DCC very well. Maybe you’ve noticed.

    @Rose
Thank you for your comments related to campaigns just getting going. We are working very long days and learning as we go. We’ve made some mistakes and then corrected them. There are likely more mistakes to come. Everyone actively involved in the campaign works more than full-time in demanding jobs, including our candidate. None of us in the lead have any campaign experience.

That being said, we’ve had several very smart people step forward and offer to help in the last couple weeks, and good things are happening.

  12. Sorry "Jon". I do know how to spell your name. Momentary lapse. Rose, if it's possible to edit my post with the correction. and delete this comment.

  13. Thank you for your comments, Jaison. And, sorry, Blogger doesn't allow comments to be edited (Wordpress and Disqus do have editing features).

  14. Thanks for the exchange Jaison. For readers, Jaison is a friend of Elan, a former boss of mine at City Cab and member of team Firpo.

As a former comment reader myself I like this stuff to be plain for all the readers.

Thanks for the offer Jaison. Two of my local political heros are Linda Atkins and Milt Boyd. They are both all in with Maggie and the DA's race is not something I know well enough to distinguish on my own. John Woolley and Julie Fulkerson are on board with Elan two other locals politicos I respect and trust. All four know more about the DA race than I will. So I'm heavily leaning Maggie if you consider the rest of her very long endorsement list, but given John and Julie's endorsement I have an ear open.

I will be listening and keeping an open(ish) mind. I would love to speak with Elan, thank you. I'm sure our paths will cross again. My main somewhat unusual concerns for a liberal are being tough on weed where possible and trying to change the culture of lawlessness that has seemed to take over Southern Humboldt. Somehow, someway, even though we have more immediate needs with more acutely dangerous drugs and violence, we have to find a way to navigate the legal limbo the County, State and Nation has left us to find our way through. I'd like to hear what a County DA can do about this if anything.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Really, Jon? Did Linda Atkins, Milt Boyd, Julie Fulkerson and John Woolley support PAUL GALLEGOS?

All these years, KNOWING what was wrong? KNOWING what the Grand Jury found? KNOWING that the office was woefully understaffed? And slipping further and further.

KNOWING people were being let out and plea bargained out when they shouldn't be?

KNOWING this - if they supported him - and you support someone NOW based on THEIR opinion?

If so - in my opinion - anything you have to say on this matter from this day forward is of no value whatsoever, for you, and anyone like you has shown that you don't care. Not about competence running an office. Not about the loss of seasoned prosecutors, not about people who work in that office who are carrying the load at half staff.

How many people have to be let out on CRUZ WAIVERS? How many people have to suffer and even die before you fucking wake up?

Seahawks or Broncos, Jon, that's all it means to you.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Rose, I don't know what any of that means.

The electorate wants to make the right decision. You have to explain it to them. I am an educated person, I just have almost zero interest in crime and punishment. I trust professionals are doing their job.

I'll listen what you have to say because this is your issue. If nothing else it's important to try to understand the other side.

It's not Broncos vs. Seahawks. It's about policy. In this world with exponential information growth sometimes we have to outsource our research. That's why endorsements mean so much. If I don't have time to investigate this or that school board or DA election, I'll check out what the NCJ or Sierra Club or HCDCC or now that I know them, people in the community I trust and respect. I think thats fair and I think we all do that to one degree or another.

For example you've decided to throw your vote in with James Inhofe, Rush Limbaugh and Coal Inc. on climate change. I know that because I understand climate change. I know that on this you are, pardon me, full of hot air. Hot air bought and paid for by the aforementioned. (This is especially frustrating given Eureka is basically at sea level) You still haven't addressed the Keeling Curve, I'm looking forward to that.

So, in this world of wonder and information, we all do what we can. I've never, ever, ever pretended to know about the DA, I've said this from the start. And you know what, I bet you another hot fudge Sunday, if I knew everything you did, I'd still come up with the opposite conclusion - and not because I'm bad or stupid or you are bad or stupid, but because we have a fundamentally different set of ethics.*

I think to say that people are dying because of the DA is incredibly unfair. I could play that game too, but I won't.

Drug and violent crime is bigger than just having an effective public prosecutor. It's also about our society's inequality, our County's position as the heart of marijuana culture and the lawlessness that promotes, our county's position on the center of a methamphetamine super-highway, etc.

I proudly was one who voted for Gallegos and would have again. I also voted for Obama, Kerry, Gore, Clinton, etc. Every time not because they were Democrats but because they were more right on policy.

I'll keep trying Rose. You have such a great avatar and name - there's hope for you yet!

    * I try to promote this book every chance I get, it's the foundation of how I deal with political differences and keeping political differences civil. It's a book by Jonathan Haidt called The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion."

  17. Poor Jon, whatever will you do - there's three democrats in a non-partisan race... whatever will you do.

You left out the Koch Brothers. You're slipping.

  18. Folks, Eric Kirk is censoring my posts again. These ethically-challenged Proggies, Eric, Judy Hodgson, and the hidden manipulators like Richard Salzman and the GAP Bangladesh sweatshop employer Fisher Family promoters Ken Miller and Mark Lovelace, they are a danger to Humboldt County working class. We will have a chance to see if Judy can overcome her political manipulation treatments of local news when it dawns on her that the Heartlands Project which she refused to report because I'm organizing it, is alive and well and will be bringing large-scale industrial development to Humboldt County.

  21. Sorry, Jon. Perhaps I should be more 'understanding.' But the truth is, I am out of patience withe people like you. Pontificating about odds like it's a s sporting event. Get real.

Despite your nice answer, you seem to be missing the fact that I am NOT advocating for any of the people in the race.

If you can't figure out why it matters that the DA be competent, and why having seasoned prosecutors matters, and it's ll just a popularity contest, by all means, go vote your conscience.

  22. The drama on here is better than day time soaps!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Jon,

You know how to reach me. Send me a text or an email. You might find the two of you are not politically aligned in many ways. Many of her supporters have a different political ideology. Endorsements are great, but groupthink is what put us in this spot (not just the DA’s race). Our endorsement list has names that will set the hair on fire of those on the right and the left, because the people are so politically charged on both sides. We don't intend to hide that fact.

Why are they endorsing? I’m not sure, but it may be that they are looking for someone with conviction who doesn’t need re-branding; even though they disagree in some areas. When key members of EPIC and Timber Industry are on the same endorsement list, and they are fully aware of the others presence, maybe competence matters more than groupthink. Maybe someone with convictions on principal, while keeping an open mind, matters more to them than who their friends are endorsing.

Mostly, I think people want someone who will stand up and/or stand against when the time comes, and not be subjected to influence because they are molded by their handlers. It also may be that they understand Public Safety is really the goal, and they want the best person to deliver that.

If you can’t see why that is important for the District Attorney, it is likely you won’t be a supporter.

    Jaison

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well said, Jaison, with one caveat. I don't see any 'handlers' with the other three candidates. They're all trying to find their way, same as you.

It's the beauty of our electoral system. Real people.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Possibly. I overheard one of the opponents spokespersons at the Eureka Chamber Dinner specifically say she was re-branding her candidate on marijuana and she clearly indicated she would be handing her candidate a script. I suppose that happens in this game, but it definitely caught the attention of those standing there to hear it. I suppose the line between targeted messaging and re-branding is a thin one. Since this is the same person who publicly accused Elan of having two different websites and making up her resume, perhaps I'm a bit sensitive on the topic.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Fair enough. But I'd posit that ALL candidates are working on how to express their message, emphasize strengths, and 'rebrand' weaknesses.

Too bad stupid pot initiative didn't pass last time, and then that would be off the table. Such a waste.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Rose, thanks for the more informational post, on the Cruz waiver, I'll read it when I get a chance. Also, Jaison, I'll be responding later if you care.

Just had to make this clear, Rose you are pro-legalization? Also, this is a sincere informational question. Even if passed, weed will be illegal federally, is there any laws a County DA will be responsible for prosecuting?

    ReplyDelete
  28. It should have been legalized back in the 70s. It's ridiculous that we are still dealing with it and the resultant big money and crime. We all know it is equivalent to booze.

Medical pot is a sham passed with a wink and a nod by those who didn't have the courage to take it all the way.

    IMO
