"It must be sad to live in Arcata, where there are so many sick young people."

What else can you say?

Update - Old Glory radio on the Journal and the Triad of Death

  1. You would think that home nursing would be a boom industry with all the sick kids. Hell, so many sick kids that I am shocked no to see gurneys lining the streets. Imagine a line of hospital beds and health care providers lined up outside of Don's after the bars close.

  3. It must be the fountain of youth, carol, why, pot took that shriveled up old cancer-ridden couple, gave them the munchies, and LOOK at the marvelous restorative powers that sacred herb has!

They'll put the cosmetics industry out of business.

Sick? Yes. I think this obsession with pot is sick.

  4. To be fair, medicine is often used when a "sickness" is not at hand.

Viagra is a medicine and is not associated with a sickness. ADHD drugs are medicine and are not associated with sickness. Cholesterol lowering drugs are medicine and are not associated with sickness. Pain pills are often issued without any "sickness", only pain. Anti-anxiety medicine is often issued with no signs of being "sick".

Face it, a doctor can prescribe medicine only after the GOVERNMENT allows it. This issue isnt about medical issues, it is about overturning the silly laws that the Puritan movement brought us in the early 20th century.

I love the pic on the cover of the NCJ this month...very sexy....

  6. For the most part exrepub/theo is right. The substances he/she enumerates are not in point of fact "medicines" they are drugs to treat various conditions not necessarily qualifying as "sicknesses" but which left untreated could become such. Marijuana is a recreational drug usually ingested for recreational purposes and like other such substances impairs various senses and motor skills. If a user of such substance harms no one else, why must the state prohibit it? In this instance the state has screwed up royally (surprise surprise) by only partially lifting the ban and complicating enforcement. On the other hand, that's what governments do.

  7. I agree. The sham is maddening, and it is perpetuating this ridiculous - I don't even know what to call it - narcissistic degradation.

What a sorry waste. Of time, of lives, of page space, of energy that could be directed in better directions.

If you legalize it, what will these people do? Will they get real jobs? Or start stealing from other people.

  8. "If you legalize it, what will these people do? Will they get real jobs? Or start stealing from other people."

so the only reason that you think pot should be kept illegal is to keep the growers in business for fear of them not being able to get real jobs? or to keep them in business so that they dont steal from you?

legalize it and things will play out how the MARKET decides. let the market decide what happens to these people. you arent their mom, they can take care of themselves.

if people want Humboldt weed once its legalized, you will have to deal with it. the market may explode or it may peter out as other regions take over as the major producers.

  9. Rose,

The real problem is in the hills where it is grown. It's so dangerous up there, you can't even go for a walk--in OUR hills--without risking your life. All the growers are armed to the teeth and often completely crazy. Many of us came here for the natural beauty. It's now off limits to all but the growers and the police.

Our hills are filled with armed, paranoid lunatics. Meanwhile, our newspaper attempts to romanticize their product.

  10. It's not like it's offensive or anything, it's just BORING and IRRELEVANT, and not the least bit creative or edgy or whatever Kyana pitched to Hank Sims while they were both stoned off their asses.

Kyana was the same genius behind the Humboldt Honeys calendar -- which never did produced a 2009 issue, by the way. Oh well, one year in a row is enough, can't expect these potheads to keep up anything consistently.

For Pete's sake, it's like these people are a walking cliche.

Now you know why real local progressives are sick of getting the run-around from the Journal whenever **REAL** issues come up.

  11. Well I sure hope that the follow up's produce something more substantial, otherwise I'd have to agree that it's irrelevant,I guess I'll wait and see if the series digs into the ridiculousness of the war on pot,and it's side efects in a substantial matter before judging further.

  12. How convenient to dismiss the armed thugs who have taken over our hills as "irrelevant."

The was on armed pot GROWERS is a good idea and deserves your support.

  13. "If you legalize it, what will these people do? Will they get real jobs? Or start stealing from other people."

They will have to make other choices just like the displaced buggy whip makers of the early 20th century. If they commit other crimes they will be dealt with by the state. Most of them have marketable skills. I know some who are talented carpenters, mechanics, electricians and artists. I also know some who are losers and thieves who will end up in jail or worse in any event.

  14. Series? Oh God.

3:54, conventional wisdom says if you legalize it the price will plummet to that of a pack of cigarettes, and only big tobacco like corporations (oh THAT word!) will be the only ones who can afford the 1. land, 2. infrastructure, 3. regulatory taxes, 4. labor costs, and 5. marketing expenses.

That doesn't mean there aren't plenty of people with their brand names and logos/packaging already designed and ready to take a stab at it.

One suspects that's what's going on with Ken Miller - imagine the dollar signs in his eyes. Vilica style rows of greenhouse after greenhouse after greenhouse covering the hills like vineyards, al that TPZ land finally in his grasp.

And 5:35, the shooting began in the 70s and things have gotten worse since then.

And yeah, 3:07, the Journal Blogthing had a post on 'Humboldt Honeys' who were vying to be "Miss High Times" - and yes, they were half-naked-if-not-naked chickies with Playboy like blurbs about their desires to represent the weed. (not that there's anything WRONG with that...)

But - If that's what your daughter aspired to, wouldn't you be so proud.

  15. Why should I be Miss/Mister HIGH TIMES?

I I believe I would make an excellent Miss High Times because I love cannabis! I enjoy smoking It makes everything so sharp more vivid. It makes my anxiety disappear. I love to be high when I workout, and partying, playing video games and watching movies. I prefer Bongs the most but is nothing wrong with the volcano, gravitron, pipes, bubblers, blunts and joints it all works. love learning about different strains and pieces of glass. I always hit up my local shop just to My dream vacation would be to go to the Cannabis Cup I love reading High Times Magazine. I have wanted to model for High Times, so heres my chance. Thank you for you vote. Peace and Love!

I should be miss high times because i belive in all that High Times satnds for, and it would be such honor to just be in your magazine!

Why should I be Miss/Mister HIGH TIMES?

Because I'm always high. From when I wake, till I pass out every day. But that never stops me from what I want to do, I'm Highly motivated. And between doing tattoos, designing and making my line and modeling them I'm a very busy person. When I'm not hard at work I'm hanging with my kicking it, smoking, bullshittin'. I'm a Juggalette, so I don't care what people think about but you don't want to mess with my family. I'm very open minded. There will always be more to learn life, but I'm pretty smart. I love getting deep in conversations and theories. I am just me! never find another like me.

  17. It's nice to see a local mag cover marijuana, the 2nd biggest industry and income producer in Humboldt County from a non-policing viewpoint for a change. Without marijuana, Humboldt County would truly be in the pit of economic depression. Without marijuana there would be far less creative activity going on here or anywhere for that matter as mj is a definite creative aid-just ask most any local musician or artist. The Goddess plant is here for a reason and good luck conservatives, trying to go up against the Divine which works in mysterious ways to change human consciousness for the better.

  18. "Without marijuana, Humboldt County would truly be in the pit of economic depression"

Another commercial for pot. Look, our national reputation as a pot Mecca, has probably driven away more legitimate business than we can imagine. Can you blame a business for not relocating here? Our hills have been taken over by domestic terrorists. As a result we have a raging drug problem in all our communities. Our law enforcement is overwhelmed and our DA is in the pocket of big pot. Meanwhile, our newspapers run stories about how sexy drugs are.

Who would want to relocate here?

    a refugee

    ReplyDelete
  19. Not to mention, every business, from big to penny-ante now drug tests potential employees.

That's certainly and unintended consequence. Is that really how you wanted to live? All this has happened in less than 20 years. People (law abiding people) are losing their freedoms...

No Libertarian viewpoint can survive those conditions.

The dope growers want to be left alone, but they bring oppression down on everyone.

Then, if recent propaganda is to be believed, they are very altruistic, and donate huge sums of money to groups whose sole purpose is to clamp down on OTHER - legitimate - businesses, while they themselves pollute, violate every law, not just the ones against growing pot, they want to lecture others on how to conduct their lives while they themselves put their own families at risk.

It's easy to have sympathy when you read SoHumBorn's stories.

It's not so easy to be sympathetic when you think about the things that law abiding citizens have to do - like pay taxes, and employee expenses, and business costs, and you realize that these people are scott free on all that - and you reflect on the fairness.

It is not easy to be sympathetic when you realize you can't walk in public parks for fear of armed growers...

It is not so easy to have sympathy when the house two houses away from you bursts into blames, and there is fuel stored in the garage that is on fire.

It is not so easy to be sympathetic when there are armed home invasion robberies a few blocks away, where people end up shot, some dead.

It is not so easy to be sympathetic when you hear that the girlfriend in the home invasion robbery was forced to tie up her boyfriend who ends up dead. And then to hear what a great guy he was. So great that he put her at risk as well as himself, and ended up making them both pay a terrible and ultimate price.

We want to be sympathetic. We are naturally drawn to side with the rebel against the revenuers. The outlaw against the enforcers. But that's the glamourous version.

Reality is when they bring the crime into your neighborhood.

There are terrible prices to pay - and as the dope growers are becoming increasingly demanding- those prices are going up.

    ReplyDelete
  20. All true, Rose.

Meanwhile, our hills are alive with--gunfire, much of it from fully automatic weapons. Spend a night in one of the SoHum "communities;" the gunfire never stops.

You're right too to point out the parasitic nature of pot growing: millions for them, fear and loathing and crumbling infrastructure for the rest of us. In fact, if the growers paid taxes on their vast earnings, this would be a wealthy county.

A great many violent crimes--including many murders--have gone unreported in Southern Humboldt. If we let it go much further, we will have a Mexican level murder rate and a completely ruined economy.

  21. Marijuana has been a problem in Humboldt for 25 years plus. It has gotten even worse since the "215" guidelines of the BOS and DA went into effect in 2003. Boatloads of people moving in from out of county, out of state to rent houses just to grow marijuana. And also to buy rural property to grow outdoor and indoor marijuana.

Another issue that may have passed over most peoples heads is; Recently it was announced Humboldt County had 5 homicides for 2008. And some stat's that the average for Humboldt was 8.5 per year. And that in 1982 there were 22 (22 homicides). Why so many in 1982? The marijuana. Because of all of the violence, before and up to 1982, and the armed encounters on private and public lands the C.A.M.P. program was quickly established. The first season of C.A.M.P. was 1983. It is not a coincidence. SoHum was really bad back then. Humboldt has never come close to 22 homicides since.

I have read SoHumborn's blog. It's well written but she tires to make the growers sound almost heroic, leading a romantic lifestyle. In reality marijuana growers are just drug dealers that make a living off of other peoples misery. Doesn't matter if you rent a 3 bedroom house in Arcata to grow or a buy a 600 acre parcel on Island Mountain, a pot grower is still nothing but a drug dealer no matter how they spin it.

The Humboldt marijuana culture or industry has corrupted all levels of our local society. It's sad.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree completely that all of these symptoms and unintended consequences are horrible. But, I hope it's clear to everybody that if it were legalized, the violence and murder would virtually go away.

The "armed, paranoid lunatics" are symptoms of a criminal enterprise, not anything inherent about cannabis itself, and if you've ever had any smokers in your personal lives I know you must realize this fact.

Mobsters used to machine gun each other and the cops down over the booze business during prohibition.

And yes, legalization of cannabis would probably do bad things to our already bad economy... but morality comes before economy and there are far too many people imprisoned right now who shouldn't be.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Agreed, Noble.

But wouldn't it have to be nationwide legalization? At least statewide, but that would have the same consequence of bringing people in from elsewhere ?

A county only legalization would invite nothing but trouble.

I do think it will happen, sooner rather than later. Because, as you note, this generation grew up with it, and knows it is itself, not inherently damaging.

SoHumBorn's posts are beautifully written, and a powerfully moving representation of that life. I don't get the sense that she is glamorizing it, the characters are brutally drawn, and the cloud over their heads very apparent.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Frankly, HER stories would have made vastly better material for the Journal.

  25. Rose, Who is SoHumBorn? Do you have a link?

    ReplyDelete
  26. noble lie,
many of the posters on this site don't want a reasonable solution to the problem. they are so afraid of pot, thanks to massive propaganda, that they would rather see the problem continue than to face facts and deal with it.

these people have been raised to hate sex, drugs and rock&roll. getting rid of that Puritan prudeness is not an easy task.

change is not easy, especially for righteous people who want to control the lives of others, due to fear of sex and open-mindedness.
oh well, old people will die off soon and the new culture will evolve. puritan beliefs are waning, not growing.

    ReplyDelete
  27. For years now convicts have been heading right up here the day they get out of San Quentin. Many are still here. You're not going to neutralize such depraved criminals by legalizing pot. They have long ago set up meth labs and heroin importing operations. You have to go in and get them out of here.

If we don't do it now, the problem will only grow to Mexican drug cartel proportions with innocent kids being shot down in the streets of our towns. As you know, that's already underway.

Please people: stop romanticizing narcotics dealing and start turning in the growers. If you see something, say something!

Or...bury your head in the sand and like Mexico we'll need to call in the army to clean out our hills.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Clarification: the convicts I'm talking about come to cash in on pot. They begin as "cleaners" and a few years later they've got their own pot plantation and have moved into heroin, cocaine, ecstasy and meth. From the first day, they are armed to the teeth and quite willing to kill.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't know anyone who was raised to hate sex, drugs and rock and roll, ex. Quite the contrary.

The baby boomers are the generation OF sex, drugs and rock and roll.

Yet as they have taken positions of power they have NOT legalized pot, something you would have thought would be the first order of business.

In fact, the generation of sex, drugs and rock and roll is hugely conflicted. Zero tolerance for their kids, which is completely unreasonable. Puritanistic in some instances, yes, but with a simultaneous mainstreaming of the porn culture.

But don't worry, those people who want to control the lives of others have found new, nice GREEN venues, and they will dictate how you live, what you eat, what you drive, and what kind of light bulbs you are allowed, permitted, to use. Pot will be legal because it will keep you sedated. You will acquiesce to their new religion or you will die.

And guess what, ex - they AIN'T Republican.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The sex, drugs and rock and roll argument is clumsy attempt at setting up a straw dog.

Bottom line: we want the drug dealers out of here!

    ReplyDelete
  31. "And guess what, ex - they AIN'T Republican."

Hypocristy! It's your party that forced school prayer, abstinence instead of birth control and faith-based aid down everyone's throats.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Shades of Reefer Madness posted here by non-marijuana people who, I suspect are happy with booze and see no problems with all the murder and mayhem, broken homes, fucked up lives associated with the booze industry.

Legally recognize the counterculture intoxicant of choice and end your paranoia and bigoted opinions of pot growing. The plant's a marvel of beauty and utility for human beings and the Northcoast Journal's pictures are a welcome change with no agenda behind it other than revealing the pervasiveness of pot influence in our local Humboldt community.

    ReplyDelete
  33. forced school prayer ? Where? No schools that I know of, nor would I or anyone I know approve of that.

abstinence instead of birth control Again, where? Some people may wish that was the case, but, at least since the 70s any kid I know who wants it not only knows where to get birth control but does. It was verboten back in the 70s too, by the way, didn't stop anyone. It's nice rhetoric you've got going, in a vacuum, but it doesn't stand up to simple MEMORY. Nevertheless, once you have teenagers, instead of BEING a teenager, your perspective on that does kinda change.

and faith-based aid And again - the reactionary rhetoric can carry the day, but to pretend there isn't ample and increasing government aid is insane. To ignore the fact that some private sectore, and yes, religious based programs can do a better job than a government program is also crazy.

I didn't like the Moral Majority anymore than I like Baykeeper, but they are long gone, and still held up like a shriveled severed head as if they are even relevant today.

Extremists on both sides are bad. But myopic rhetoric is just as harmful.

    ReplyDelete

more fear mongering.....grow a pair and deal with problems that actually exist. we dont need scaredy cats making up myths in order to excuse the lack of logical lawmaking that created this problem.

why would you DEFEND the actions of a government that clearly has lost control of the problem? maybe you like chaos? is that why you make up lies about inmates flooding the area?

  35. legalization would invite nothing but trouble.

    Ah ha! But for whom?

Just about a month ago "FULL LEGIZATION" came to Arcata City. Oh they had 'iffy' leglization before, but NOW with the passing of the Land Use Code (LUC) portion dealing with MMJ (aka p215 aka Medical Cannabis aka Medical Marjuana) its 'fully legal!'

But with legaltiy comes responcablity and a whole plethry of laws that I've gone over so many times before Rose, I'm supprised to never see you mention them. Okay here we go again:

a.) can you produce ANYTHING at home for the use by the public? (answer is a resounding "NO" with out a home business use permit, business lic. et al)

b.) can you GROW ANYTHING at home in a Res. Zone for the use of the publiic? (answer is "no growing AG in a RES. Zone" period end of story)

c.) Can you grow vegies and herbs (even the demon cannabis) for your own use, if you have proper papaer work? - ie a MD's recomendations.

YES - but you CAN NOT sell it or provied it for anyone elses use!

    ---------

So as I've said all along that Leglization WILL cause such 'problems' for those involved with cannabis, as much as leglization of booze caused for the bootleggers, they had to 'get legal' or get out of the business or be branded Out Laws.

The frist 10 years or so of p215 we've seen this flip flop, all the 'pro-MMJ people, politiicans et al' were trying to be INCLUSIVE. While the Anit-MMJ people were trying to be ultra-stringant, and it was a tug of war on both sides.

Now with "real" leglization the whole mess is sorting out. You don't have to worry about if a p215 grow is going to get tossed out of court because they had some paper work. It never goes to court, it goes to the City Building and Planning Dept, and if it is bigger then for one person (dropped to 50 sq ft - and that CAN include everything it takes to grow the cannabis also = total 'production area') then the building inspector comes out and if its 'red taged' PG&E is called and the meeter is pulled and that is the end of that.

Word will 'get out' that Arcata is NOT MMJ freindly and so growers will go else where.

    -------------
Next Eureke and the rest of the city, then the county will adpot it.
    -------------

After which the whole state will adopt it, its such the perfect answer to the 'cannabis problem' with grow houses and people doing AG production in Res. Zones = its quite simply illegal.

    --------------

Yes Rose what that means is that a person can't grow for more than themself in Arcata. ... And probibly (99% chance) that will sprad to the rest of the county soon.

NOT as a p215 guidelines, but as a simple inforcment of EXISTING codes on the books. (As I've said for some time now. Just takes time for our 'officals' to get it, they don't work for a living you know, their city and county people. Lets see I frist perposed this back in 2003 ... five years not bad!)

    -------------

Now as to the 'guys in the hills' crap you can't even get their homes inspected ...

But here's how that will work under "REAL LEGIZATION" - it will be on the reciving end. "White market" if you will 'shops' (now have to be called Coops or Collectives) ...

there is a movement with in the LEGAL LIGIT coops/collectives (can I please just ccall them shops its so much less to type) - anyway the Ligit Shops are coming together - and have been for years under the MCA (Med Can Ass_) as legalization comes closer, we're seeing more and more shops slowly flock to the MCA.

Amoung other things (testing for purity, contenct, mold, e-coli, toxic pestices, organic et al) they are ALSO pushing for all LEGAL cannabis to be 1090'ed. IE FULL TRANSPARNCY.

So "Joe Hippy gun shooter grower' in the hills - who don't conton to havin his home inspected will NOT be able to sell his cannabis white market, because he has no ispection, no business permits and sure as hell don't want no 1090 to have to pay taxes on it. Nor does Mr. Mex_ cartel grower.

This will effectiveely remove the 'gray area' in the "white market"
    ----------

Pricing: Now this is F*n werid, but every county (and I've said this before WITH CITATIONS - which I'll provide again if anyone wants them.)

But every county that has legal cannabis has kept the current prices OR has UPPED the prices of the legal 'gov pot' to more then the street pot! (weird huh = you can get cheeper cannabis in a 'club' in Canada or the Netherlands then you can get at a pharmicy in the same country.

and here's another SHOCKER for you - Humboldt prices beat all of those! (as I say I've given you coupious citations on all this - and will do so again!)

So I don't feel pricing will be effected - unless (ahum) some bright boy (oh that DT) 'short sells' the market and drives prices down.

As I always ssy "Do you REALLY think the same people who market cigerets to little kids - are going to drop the price on pot?"

Or Big Pharmicys are going to? == Hell they have a sheme right now to sell 1 joints worth of cannabis for $125 -

More later - my sweety is calling me to take a hot tub -

I love you Rose - but - well soomethings have prorites!

    DT

Now when I see people romanticizing or belittling the drug dealers in our hills, I speak up. And if I see something, believe me, I say something--to the police! I've had the satisfaction of putting some real monsters out of business, with more to come.

  39. ...what that means is that a person can't grow for more than themself in Arcata. ... And probably (99% chance) that will spread to the rest of the county soon....

DT you are the voice of reason on this thing, and better informed on the history and the current situation than anyone I know of...

That, grow for yourself, is what I think we were all voting for with 215, knowing that the "medical" crap was a wink and a nod...

The ag zone thing seems to be the solution to the growhouses, and sadly regulations will increase because people just can't do things right without being forced, I guess.

I'm not against legalization, I just ask alot of questions about what the unforeseen repercussions might be.

I certainly never thought 215 would mean people renting houses, cutting holes in walls, overloading electrical circuits and burning other people's property down, and the militance that has come with that - and I mean militant you can't do anything to me to stop me or to make me accountable if I wanna be a criminal kind of militance, Schectman-like, do you know who my friend is? kind of thing.

The only real downside I see is that you'll need a whole new set of enforcers to force compliance of paying taxes, and complying with business and environmental and employee kinds of rules - because outlaws are used to free rein.

DT - I haven't posted much about your points, because I figure people are reading them here in the comments - but I would be happy to make them into a post if you want to send me a write-up (I'll fix the spelling :)) - or, if you prefer, I will just pull from what you have already said.

== Hell they have a sheme right now to sell 1 joints worth of cannabis for $125 - Ive cited all this perviously too.

so the consept of pricing driving the 'boys in the hills' out of business is just plain WACKED.

Corprate greed and Gov. incompatance (and greed) have always shown they will keep prices up on any comidity that is already at a 'base price'.

I did a whole report for Roger R. and published by the BOS's on exactly this.

I belive that its so ego-non-stonic that people just can't belive that price wouldn't drop after leglization, but they won't.

    ---------

So in summing up, today we have MANY BOOZE bootlegers still in the hills in the Souther US, and the Feds et al, still go after them. Huge high tech stills, still pumping out booze. Whole programs on it on the Nat Geo or History stations.

Same with MJ - the diffrence at this very momennt in time, there lies a loop hole, in p215 as its production is not being inforced as any other herb that is grown.

This loop hole is closing up, and as it does the deviding line between legal and illegal production and sales will become more and more wider and more evedent to everyone involved.

In a side note - which you might get a kick out of, one of "Miller's Minions" got his nickers in a ruff, as I suggested or branded all So Hum MJ producers and a filthy bunch with abismal production methods that were all greedy.

he was carring on about how BAD the PG&E use was - and that indoor should be banned or heavly taxed.

I mentioned one of the clubs who gives away medical cannabis in large amounts to cancer, hiv/aids, ms and like paitnets "catistrphoics" I belive they call them ...

I went on to suggest that that club would love to turn its lights OFF if the 'non-greedy' growers in So Hum would donate the amount that is given away, and also provide at the low cost to the rest of this certain clubs patients get it at (below current wholesale).

The Miller Minion left the conversation at that point as I asume he couldn't provide me with anyone who was going to give cannabis away to poor sick people.

As I recall the club I was refrancing provides free top grade medical cannabis to any catistrpoich pateint who makes less then 20K a year, that's 2x the poverty level.

The Miller Minion had nothing to say to that - intresgting huh? Compassion from the Hills of So Hum. = totally lacking!

I asked him why a place like that in Arcata was even needed if the growers in So Hum were so Non-Greedy (he didn't want the greedy ones being confused with the non-greedy ones)

As he nor none of his 'non-greedy' freinds were ready to step up and take over the give aways and low price program of the club in Arcata - well excuse me if I can't tell the greedy from the non-greedy - they all looks the same from where I'm standing.

    (giggle, sigh)

So it will go - the gulf will get wider, Wayen Hanson and Sargent Peterson will have plenty to do as the gulf becomes wider and the abusers of p215 become more aparent, though DOL, OSHA, ADA, Land Use codes etal.

  41. get a f-----g clue. You progs don;t have any important issues. The NCJ is going in the direction as A rcata ,the county and the rest of the state, Down Hill! If you nuts would worry about manners, working for what you get and understanding that x-repubs like Greg are the problem, then you can work for something good. Pot will go back to its place as a not6 so important intoxicant . Not the focus of a self indulgent non-society.

  42. "abstinence instead of birth control ...Nevertheless, once you have teenagers, instead of BEING a teenager, your perspective on that does kinda change."

It does indeed. I would hope you give your teenager condoms and do your best to discuss sex openly.

  43. if you don't present all options, you're doing them a disservice - and that includes a mandate that, no matter how uncomfortable they feel, if they decide to go for it, they need to get protected first, and they have to tell you so that you can take them in and get it, safely and reputably. Abstinence is an option, too.

In this age of aids, it is a life-saving discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  44. In the 70s, Arcata High not only had classes - Psych and Psych-Sex (The Psychology of Human Sexuality), they also had mini-courses on birth control, etc.

This is a good thing - and should be reinstated.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hum - giving lectures on HIV/AIDS information we are NOT allowed to mention condums.

It's totally bizar. the total lack of knowledge by the 'kids' (EHS AHS) is amazing. A young couple sitting in back, necking sort of, neck covered in hickies said "everyone knows you can't get a girl pregnante after you come once. Is it the same with AIDS?"

I was stuned and this kid was oviouly useing this 'logic' on the girl sitting next to him, but can't mention condums. GRRRRR things are nuts totally nuts!

  46. Same thing that has gone on since time immemorial - and it's stupid.

It's one of the most important things in life, and it ought to be sanely and rationally discussed.

I find it hard to believe you couldn't mention condoms, but can't discount it.

Planned Parenthood does offer classes, or did, and I think they could be arranged privately for your kids or a groups of kids if you wanted it. I know some people who did that, and it seemed like a good idea. Don't know the details, sorry.

With Aids in the picture, you just have to put aside any personal feelings or religious indoctrination and deal honestly with life-saving information.

  47. DT is Eric Heimstadt, and Eric is being a bit blatant with his gloating over the fact that his prices for the non-catastrophic AND poor patients will get to rise as he drives his competition out of business.

In other words, DT/EH/HMS market share will increase and profits will increase, and Eric has successfully manipulated the Arcata City Council into putting the squeeze to his competition to do so.

Maybe the results will be positive, on the whole, I'm willing to admit, since Eric does enforce organic growing standards and proper wiring and all. But it's not like he's doing all this simply out of a sense of charity.

  52. We watched a program on the history of bootlegging. One interesting tidbit is that the Canadians capitalized on the U.S. prohibition laws. Although there also were prohibition laws in Canada, the Canadians legalized exporting alcohol, taxed it, and made a handsome profit.
Needless to say, lots of money was being made on both sides of the border. Nowadays, hemp products (for clothing, rope, ect.) are manufactured in Canada in then sold in the U.S.

It is a beautiful plant and Kyana's photographs are lovely.

  54. I'm going to agree with refugee on this one. Propaganda - and truly unremarkable. If not for the content which is supposed to be 'unusual' - they are amateurish. Unless Kyana is an 8 year old budding genius. And I agree with others, on other blogs as well as here, that this 'photo essay' is not worthy of the Journal. A waste of space. The whole thing is just ludicrous.

  55. "The whole thing is just ludicrous."

And like the old cigarette ads, potentially lethal. But with pot, you don't get to wait decades for the cancer to kill you. The next car that pulls up to your house could be your death sentence.

In fact, the pot shown in the photo is quite enough to put Kyana at serious risk, if say, she has it stashed in her studio. For more see SoHumBorn.

  63. So pictures of marijuana and people in a magazine constitutes propaganda? The comments here by non-pot people are still right out of Reefer Madness with the same bigoted point of view based on prejudice and not facts. Leave marijuana alone, those of you who do not use it and stop trying to use political power of non-pot majorities to stop minority rights to use this wonderful medicine and mild intoxicant God has blessed humanity with. Unless you become a fire-breathing dragon your chances of escaping the world's pull on your whole consciousness, the basic requirement for finding God, will likely never happen in your lifetime. Be respectful of other people's sacrament and do away with criminalizing it and stop denigrating the people who use marijuana.

  64. You mean that WASN'T the series? There's going to be MORE? Let me guess, a beautifully manicured hand with a gun and a photoshopped pot leaf on the handle. Oh, the subtlety. You'd have been laughed out of art class for this.

If we legalize it, can we get over this bizarre worship? God, it would be worth it just for that.

I'll say one thing, though, You can't, I don't think, blame Hank for the cover. Faced with that set of photos, the art dept. had to choose the one that would actually LOOK good on the cover, so they picked the only one that could. If I had to pick, I would have picked the same one. I'm guessing. But that's what I would think happened.

  65. mresq:

People are really tired of giving the local drug lords a pass. The art glorifying pot the NCJ cover got a strong reaction here because we don't buy this propaganda. The growers are making millions while the county is going broke. They pay virtually zero taxes and cost us millions in law enforcement. They harass nearly every county official who drives up into the hills for any reason. Big Pot's main contribution to Humboldt has been an epidemic of hard drugs, the likes of which were unknown before pot infested our community. Finally, we want our hills back!

So while you "relax," we're on the phone with the police.

    Agreed. So then, decriminalize it.

What is propoganda is to one, is art to another, or something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Yeah, quit mixing marijuana with the politics of prohibition and its inevitable outcome in human misery. The plant is a remarkable panacea that can aid human beings in too many ways to let its present criminal status be tolerated. Legalize it and go complain about vineyard growers and liquor store owners ruining people's lives for a change.

They're making good money because of those like you who desire to ensure that the market is kept on check and prices remain high.Law enforcement needs pot to remain illegal for it's agencies simply related to pot enforcement to stay alive and receive funding.Growers need it to stay illegal because....well....I'll let you figure that one ought yourself.

  70. So when the foot-stomping temper tantrum pays off, and this thing you want made legal now is legal, what will be next?

Because we all know the battle is the fun of it, and winning will not satiate the warriors.

And, aside from that, mresquan - will you also lift the zero-tolerance policies off school kids? 'Cause it is inordinately hypocritical for pouty baby-boomers and pot smokers, and alcohol consumers to try to block kids from doing what they themselves did at that age, and do now with a vengeance.
