  5. Racism? No, it's the odd GREEN color that comes from the booking camera, it turns everyone green. The great equalizer, maybe. You can see from several post below that not all jurisdictions use this green filter.

  6. Definitely racism. See Anon 10:57 to confirm. The fellow actually looks like a typical young Asian man and I'm guessing now seeing that Arabs are being profiled here as terrorists worthy of death and not human beings under constant military, political and economic attack by European and European-American and European Israelis, that if he was white European Rose wouldn't have picked his picture as an "alien".

  7. Well - he's GREEN! Pretty much every Humboldt mugshot is GREEN. The picture makes him look GREEN. Martians are imagined to be GREEN. If that's what you mean by alien, for crying out loud.

Maybe it's time for some different lighting, then they can all get contracts with GQ.

  8. Oh, DEAR! You may be right!

The way you talk about your garden may be racist

Via David Thompson, The Telegraph reports, Is Gardeners’ Question Time racist?:

It is the softly spoken radio show that provides good-natured help and advice to thousands of gardeners every week.

So regular listeners to Gardeners’ Question Time may be horrified to discover it has been accused of peddling racial stereotypes….

But Dr Ben Pitcher, a senior lecturer in sociology at the University of Westminster, claimed the programme’s regular discussions on soil purity and non-native species promoted nationalist and fascist beliefs.

  9. Shhhhhh!!!! Don't tell the Native-Plant Society they are now fascists.

  10. I thought of watchpaul when the NYT asked this about Rick Perry's indictment by a grand jury for abuse of power.

" "Mr. McCrum said it was a matter of procedure that anyone charged with a felony “will have to be booked in,” including the governor. Asked if Mr. Perry would have to have a mug shot taken and be fingerprinted, he added, “I imagine that’s included in that.” "

Mug shots are significant in our image conscious world. Law enforcement goes out of their way to make them as humiliating as they can and sites like yours Rose makes sure there is an audience for them.

From a random article when Googling "pillory mugshots"

"Shaming people in public has always been a tantalizing idea to Americans -- punishing wrongdoers by making them hang their heads before their community."

That's what this blog is all about isn't it? Shame. That was a mugshot Rose, that guy was still innocent when it was taken and even if now convicted, public shaming is cruel and unusual. Let's stick to the punishments the juries and judges mete out.

  11. Well, Jon, you should give LoCo and equal dressing down - they post mugshots nearly every day. As does just about every news source, as you well know. In case you didn't notice, this is more a commentary about the poor lighting that turns all people green. Having someone deal with that, and adjust whatever needs to be adjusted would be a good thing. Nor am I the first to comment on the green tinge, as you know full well, being a regular at LoCo, where it is a frequent topic of discussion.

  12. Anon - thank you? We live in interesting times, which btw, wiki says may or may not have derived from a Chinese proverb.

Rose - and I'm completely serious - I did not know LoCO posts mugshots regularl - probably b/c I click completely different stories than you do. And the fact that the mugshots are behind a click is good first step. Reader, if you are interested in the crime reporting, click away. I'm not. And ftr (for the record) I do give them quite the dressing down too for being a digital tabloid.*

The green lighting can be easily fixed if law enforcement had respect for those they arrest. It's part of the shame factor that we associate as a society even with getting arrested. That's why the nyt asked about if the mug shot would be required. I promise you this Rose - if/when Rick Perry was to take a mug shot, there would be no green tinge.

    * The same can be said for me, "follow your own advice idiot, if you don't like mugshots, click away from WatchPaul! I like WatchPaul b/c Rose is overtly political (the news stories are not) and I am interested in policy. I am interested in electing thoughtful, hardworking, empathetic leaders to elected positions to include Sheriff and DA. One of the most vibrant places to have this discussion, along with the inevitable overflow to conservative/liberal politics is watchpaul.
