Subject: CA Voter Guide + SoHum event for Elan Firpo

(California Voter Guide below)

I support Elan Firpo for D.A. She is the only candidate currently working as Deputy District Attorney, she is endorsed by the Humboldt Civil Liberties Defense Fund and simply stated, she's brilliant and offers the best choice for Humboldt County's future. She has extensive experience managing personnel and has articulated fresh ideas for moving the office forward. Her primary opponent, Maggie Fleming, is backed by Sheriff Downy, the Deputy Sheriff's Association and the EPD and Fortuna police officers' associations. Given our troubled past with law enforcement in Humboldt County, from the use of pepper spray on non-violent protesters to the killing of Cherie Moore, I do not want them to be choosing our next D.A.. Simply put, I believe Fleming would be a return to power for the old guard, which would be most unfortunate for Humboldt County's future.

  4. Fred, can access back comments to the days when Elan and other candidates first announced running? I predicted then Firpo would lose the election because of becoming associated with Richard Salzman and the Prog gang. Now she's desperate and the Prog gang is stepping to the front to try to derail Maggie which isn't possible, she's managed to stay above the fray as a true leader.

  5. Btw, for the uninitiated,
"Reagan was the first presidential candidate ever to appear at the fair, and he knew exactly what he was doing when he told that crowd, “I believe in states’ rights.” Reagan apologists have every right to be ashamed of that appearance by their hero, but they have no right to change the meaning of it, which was unmistakable. Commentators have been trying of late to put this appearance by Reagan into a racially benign context.[8]

From Bob Herbert from wiki if you Gooogle Neshoba and Reagan.

I was going to say I'm not speaking about any analog to racism in this case, but unfortunately there is. Want to hear it spoken softly? Listen to Supervisor Sundberg during the recent 5th District Supervisorial Debate on KEET.

There is a touch of racism here but the main unspoken politics going on is this is a nod to the so called mom and pops. Firpo is saying what I'm afraid to acknowledge Gallegos must have been saying. "We are good Sohum".

It's still against the law. We do have to enforce laws, or at the very least not give tacit approval. If we ignore weed, what will be the next laws or codes to be ignored? Envirnmental? Maybe ends justifies the means vigilantism?

Many liberals are wrong on Firpo. Not all, or even most, just a few with what I think are vested interests that can't be spoken in public, but can be dog-whistled.

    ReplyDelete
  6. What vested interest. Their civil rights? Thre desire to have free thinking intelligent woman who understands people and the community? The desire to not have their DA beholden to a crony good ol boy network?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Liberal Jon. That is flat out dishonest. Elan has been asked about the mom and pops several times. She consistently says a crime is a crime and none are immune to prosecution. In her Humboldt Access series she makes it very clear that marijuana is the root source of a lot of our crime. All three other candidates have given an open pass to mom and pops. So you are either uninformed or lying.

  8. LJ. Paul is popular in SoHum. Didn't hear you say anything when Fulkerson and Linda Doerflinger introduced Firpo in Arcata, or Neal in Trinindad, or Patty Clary in Hoopa. Or Ben Shepherd and Woolley in Mckinleyville.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Stephen, just to be clear, having progressive support is the reason Firpo will lose the election? So if she hadn't been working progressives, she would have won?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Paul is not running for re- election so he can spend more time with the family ?! That reason or excuse is all too common in politics so I'm not sure what it really means.

It would appear that all agree the DA's office has serious problems. Since Paul has been at the helm for the past three terms it's logical, or fair, to assume that much of the problems come from his managegment of the office. That begs the question ???? Why would Firpo want the endorsement of Paul, the guy would made a mess of the office?

I guess it's because the election is just around the corner and she (Firpo) and her election group are experiencing panic.

Looks like Firpo is hitching her wagon to Paul's base, the same ones that helped bring the situation in the DA's office to the condition it is today.

    1. Why would Fleming who has been begging for his endorsement. That plus the fact that Fleming enabled him vocally and strongly for 10 plus Years. Shit she is at the source of that office's problems.

  11. Let's see. Firpo is hitching her wagon to Paul's base and businesses. Fleming is hitching herself to Bonnie Neely and old attorneys and judges. We shall see what is the better strategy. Or maybe it is who they are. Firpo is big on civil rights and fiscal management. Fleming is big trial experience and attachment to law enforcement. Will be interesting.

What is the problem or issue with a DA candidate having the support of law enforcement? The DA's Office is supposed to work with law enforcement as a team to find the truth and hold criminals accountable for their actions. Right ?

Some people trash talk Fleming because she has the support of law enforcment, attorneys, and judges. Not to mention the support of non law enforcement court personnel, and retired judges (because it would be improper for sitting judges to endorse anyone for obvious reasons). This group of individuals have had a front row seat to the workings, and failings, of the DA's Office and their collective opinions are very telling.

Firpo, in her ads, have made a big to do about coming from a law enforcement family. Her dad and grand dad are retired CHP and a sister is a police dispatcher and a brothr a cop? I think I got that right. Like she is a better choice for DA becasue her Dad and Grand dad are retired CHP? I'm sure Firpo is a nice lady and her dad and grand dad were successful and honorable CHP officers but, how is it that a law enforcement connection for Firpo is a good thing but a law enforcement connection for Fleming is a bad thing??

Maggie Fleming by far the best choice.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Having the endorsement of law enforcement isn't really the issue. I'm sure that any of the candidates would repair the current rift. As you mention, Elan is pro-law enforcement, as in respect for officers and the profession. This taken from another blog sums it up:

At the March 13th at Tea Party Debate, Maggie Fleming announced her endorsement by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Organization and at the same time endorsed the policy of midnight release, because “they often need to get to work in the morning”
After a push back from the community, she said she did not support the policy but instead they were just “following the law.” Of course this was a lie, since they have now altered their POLICY. She was the only candidate to endorse Downey’s policy, and the only candidate claiming Downey. Allan Dollison made a television ad on this point, and Elan Firpo has called Fleming out on this several times in debate.

Then it gets really troubling. After the Tea Party Debate, Maggie Fleming received $275.00 from Sheriff Downey and $2500.00 from HCSO, making it her largest non-family contributor. She did not disclose the $2500.00 as required by law in an effort to hide it. Only after a reporter found a document http://johnchiv.blogspot.com/2014/04/sheriffs-donation-listed-on-hcdcc.html that inadvertently went public on the Democrat Central Committee website did we learn of the donation. When the story broke, she quickly went down and made the proper report, but the FPPC rules for timely reporting had already been violated. This was after Allan Dollison pointed out that she asked the Sheriff’s department to hide the endorsement in the first place. It should be noted that Paul Gallegos was fined $10,000.00 for a similar violation in his last election campaign.

Maggie Fleming spends a great deal of effort trying to establish her independence from the law enforcement who is clearly trying to put her in power, but the facts speak for themselves. When the watcher is put in power by law enforcement and the crony power brokers, we all have something to fear.

The retired judges backing her are the same judges who let the good ole boys get off scott free when Terry Farmer made his special notation in the file.

Maggie Fleming has now shot a commercial with Mike Downey, and rumor has it the Downey’s campaign team is now working with Fleming to help her get elected. Also, in that commercial is Melinda Ciarabellini, former law enforcement, and recently deposed member of the DCC. Her husband, Pete Ciarabellini, also law enforcement, handles Fleming’s signs per her DCC letter http://www.humboldtdemocrats.org/sites/default/files/Fleming_candidate_statement%20april%202014.pdf. Rumors are Sheriff Deputies have been seen with Fleming signs in the squad car trunks.

The best evidence lies in Fleming’s own ads, her endorsement list, and recent Letters to the Editor. Leave her failures her failures with the Child Abuse Services Aside. Forget her lack of management experience or waffling on every issue. Maggie Fleming simply does not have the integrity to hold the office of District Attorney. Those are the facts.

  23. Anons - "So you are either uninformed or lying." That seems a little pushy. Here is a question of mine and an answer from someone I trust on the issue.

" EK, which are the two that would ”approach marijuana prosecution also from an environmental perspective”. I would reconsider my vote if he/she isn’t among those two.

    May 11, 2014 at 7:33 am
    Eric Kirk

LJ – I’m not certain that the other two wouldn’t address the prosecutions that way, but both Elan and Maggie have explicitly spoken of the issue in those terms ."

So anon - on this... "She consistently says a crime is a crime and none are immune to prosecutional" ... I understand the words. However, I'd be very wary of SoHum environmentalism and/or criminal law. It's a libertarian brand that says we get environmentalism and reduced crime by promoting individual property rights, individual responsibility and best practices. I don't disagree, if fact I heartily agree, but there has to be public sector oversight too.

So that's why the rhetoric of a campaign may sound great, but you have to also take a look at who is supporting whom to try to figure out the niceties of principles behind the campaign rhetoric.

If you figure these out, you can begin to understand who is going to win this race and why.

    ***** also *****

"Don't worry about LJ. He supports Maggie, because she is "smart growth". He really isn't functional beyond that concept."

I don't think I've ever said who I support because I don't know enough about this race to discuss it for the reasons it should be discussed. I do try to understand the people, the power structure and the politics surrounding the race and I comment on that.

The DA's race is not a place to advocate for smart growth, however, I will advocate for a DA that believe in the following the law and doing their job professionally. On that I don't disagree with good people like Rose. Justice does need to be blind - especially of politics.

The DA's office is not about smart growth. It's about a being a part of a public sector as empowered to do what is right by we the people. It's a public sector that should not invoke fear in us, because it is us.

So in this one case, many conservatives and liberals will vote for the same person. I won't endorse her because Allan has reached out to progressives including the Eureka Progressive Club for support and he was the only candidate who did. However, there is no denying the liberal/conservative coalition Maggie garners with everyone from Linda Atkins to Rex Bohn on board. I think the reason for this is interesting - in the DA's race -both those that still understand the public sector has an important role to play in society and those that want an effective and professional justice system to put the scoundrels behind bars - both "sides" are united on this.

This leaves the other three candidates the chance to try to make their best case why the establishment local political scene has gotten it wrong.

    ReplyDelete

    1. On June 3rd when your establishment candidate does not walk away with the crown, you will get a clue.

  24. Why such vicious attacks on Maggie Fleming? Why not go after AK and AD too ?

Because Fleming is the logical and by far best choice for DA. And it's apparent that the Firpo camp is well aware of this.

Fleming has the experience and all that goes with it. There is a reason why such a wide variety of people in the community support Fleming. And that is because she has a solid reputation for being professional, reasonable, and fair.

    1. There have been issues raised about Arnie and Allan. Your use of initials with Allan and Arnie's names reveals you for the insider you are.

Maggie Fleming has way more money than any of her opponents. Her arrogance and the arrogance of her supporters is unbelievable.

She has shown she cannot handle power. The election is not even over and her supporters lie, smear and bully other opponents and their supporters.

Someone needs to clue in Maggie and her supporters. She is not crowned DA, she is elected by voters and they have choices of three other candidates.

Look at her supporter list. It is overwhelmingly rich lawyers, law enforcement, county counsel, courthouse department heads and elected officials.

Yeah, Maggie is really watching out for the People.

      Delete
  25. I didn't see any vicious attacks on Fleming. Alan has acknowledged his failures while Fleming covers them. This office is about integrity. Fleming says what she needs to when she is in front of each group. The fact that she refused to have the public forum in Mckinleyville video recorded tells you everything you need to know. Or better look at her advising the supervisors to hide what they were paying in legal fees. LJ I'm a little surprised you support that lack of transparency.

  26. And Anon 11:39, she will watch over you too,and it does not matter who you support, that's the way she is,that's the way she does business, she works for the people like you, whether you support her or not. 27. Alright, here it is in Salzman's own words, Firpo will be against law enforcement. If you were expecting a change from Paul's position to work with law enforcement, from Salzman, forget that, Firpo will carry on exactly as Gallegos. What more do people need to hear, aren't you tired of "business as usual" where plea bargains, special treatment for certain attorneys, cases not being filed, and violent criminals going free. Are we all tired of that???Well Salzman says it all, none of that will change with Firpo. Lovely, just lovely!

  28. Maggie and Arnie's entire campaign strategy from the beginning has been to link Elan to Paul and Salzman. They cannot run or win on their own merits.

Elan or the campaign has never denied the support of Salzman or Paul. There is a difference between support and campaign team.

Maggie and Arnie need to answer questions about why their campaign supporters include present DA employees, why the Sheriff's department is putting up signs and walking for Maggie. In addition to donations.

When the next 460s come out Maggie better have reported all donations. No oops I forgot.

Law enforcement respect Elan too. Just because their bosses may endorse Maggie does not mean the rank and file do not support Elan.

    -anon

WTH? Wow. Anon's seriously these DA race threads will make one's head spin unless one recognizes who or where anon's are coming from. For the record, and again on one of these, a) I support transparency but not always and under all circumstances, not going to nit-pick this or that specific case because it obviously has nothing to do with the actual issues in this race and b) I think we all agree - even this smart growth advocate that smart growth is not a concern in this race - at all. I don't know how more clearly I can state that. Enforcement and prosecution of environmental laws, codes, regulations is a concern, policies related to smart growth such as encouraging growing in already established urban footprints while leaving agriculture and timberlands for the long term is not.

Maybe one of the candidates you support may win. The only bottom of the barrel politics is who you hitch your wagon to.

If you had any self respect, you would shut up, at least for a day.

You have never owned a business, never built anything, and now work a job, most likely given to you as a favor for being Neely and Atkins mouthpiece.

  44. One more thing... Those bottom of the barrel politics are what it takes to get people elected who can't say in writing we want to "protect agriculture and timberland for the long term"

Sorry friend, in a political context, unless you are feeling bullied, it's not appropriate to shut up when told to shut up.

So let's steer away from the personal - ie "self respect" and "you've never owned a business...etc."

I will say for the record, since occupation is inherently political as we all have vested interests, you are right. Never owned a business and never built anything other than working to improve myself, my family and my community, but in the way you mean that phrase, no, I've never build a home or a business with my own resources.

Getting that out of the way, let's talk what is really going on here and that is the battle of narratives. What you are saying is just wrong. I've met Bonnie Neely and before Chris ran I almost begged her to run and Linda Atkins is a personal hero of mine.

But in my code of ethics - and to pull it out of the personal again to political - in many if not most liberals and progressives - we do not believe in nepotism or cronyism. Not all, some might be perfectly content to have job only to make money and further their own interests - but this would be a very rare few - the exceptions to the rule.

Most of us - like you are people who have world views and are doing the best we can to make this community, country and world a better place.

Hopefully that deflates the antagonism. (I realize the opposite is likely the truth, but one continues to try.)

So let's work now on your narrative. One that says if you are not an owner or didn't build anything, you are not of the same value for some reason.

I reject this as absurd. We need owners and builders and entrepreneurs and I respect and honor them. We also need workers to do the labor whether physical or mental and put in the time that serves a greater purpose whether that is simply earning a profit or a larger good or both. So, yes I respect and honor workers such as myself and hope you would too.

Having said that, the entrepreneur, owner does have a responsibility doesn't he (usually right now) to pay his workers a living wage. One that if the worker chose to work with that employer for his or her entire life the worker should be able to not live in fear of having to rent their entire life living paycheck to paycheck or losing everything if they happen to get leukemia, say.

So yes, let's honor owners AND let's honor workers and let's make sure both can live sustainably and in harmony. This is why we have civics and even politics.

These are the types of discussions we need to have, not "shut up" and not dog whistle gossip. I rejected them when anon's brought bullshit up about people I oppose and I hope you anon 2:49 would too.

Let people like anon 10:58 do what they do, because we have no choice. But call it out and let's agree conservatives and liberals that it's baloney. Let's get back to civics and leave baloney behind. That's really what the people want as they vote less and less. Even though many think they want the drama as they comment on it, watch it, and pay for it, in the end, something deeper in them wants to live in a civil society. We know this because of the hords of people who will choose not to vote on June 3rd.

    Have a good day friend.

PS. If this becomes true "Liberal jon, after june 3rd, you will have proof you know nothing."

You've got it completely backward. The results, if unsatisfactory (to folks on the liberal /progressive/ Democratic side of the chasm) simply means more work has to be done to educate and inform against baloney. That's what democracy is all about and with reality on one's side, the politics will come - the only question is when.

    What reality?

  48. lib jon, you will never get it. Not having owned a business, never taken a risk, you have all the time to sit here and pontificate. You have no clue what it takes to pay a living wage and have people depend on you.

You just spout what Mother Jones tells you.

Your solution is go get the money from the unlimited money tree. That money comes from people who invest in the economy.

People who have vision, risk money they have earned to build a business. Others do not need to pay for your fantasy idea of utopia.

You want to dictate to others how to live or what to believe. And you accuse others who fought for your right to speak up.

You will find out that in politics, some people are true friends. Others, only until you do their bidding.

Bonnie Neely, Linda Atkins, Chris Kerrigan have money backing them.
They talk jobs. They have created none and any they have are funded by taxpayers. Their solution is always asking for someone else's money. Who do you think funds government? You?

California is not business friendly at all. Those empty storefronts and people out on the streets are because of ideology like yours. Just keep following your pied piper down the merry path to poverty.
