Arcata infant's parents face child abuse charge
The parents of a 4-month-old Arcata boy will be arraigned on Thursday, each facing a single charge of willful harm or injury to a child, according to the Humboldt County District Attorney's Office.

The Arcata Police Department arrested Michelle Darlene Thompson, 34, and Brandon Scott Santiago, 21, on suspicion of injuring their child on March 3. The APD reported the two had taken the boy to a local emergency room, and the infant was later flown to Oakland Children's Hospital for treatment of several fractured ribs, a lacerated liver and head trauma....

...The infant was taken to the emergency room on Thursday by his parents and was later sent to Oakland due to the life-threatening injuries, said APD Sgt. Todd Dokweiler. When the boy arrived at the children's hospital, it was determined he had several fractured ribs, a lacerated liver and head trauma....

The child's parents, 34-year-old Michelle Darlene Thompson and 21-year-old Brandon Scott Santiago, were arrested and booked into Humboldt County jail on suspicion of willful injury to a child and corporal injury to a child, according to the APD.

According to the jail, they are no longer in custody after they posted an unknown amount of bail. There are currently no court dates set for the parents, according to the Humboldt County District Attorney's Office. Deputy District Attorney Kelly Neel said in an e-mail that the investigation into the case is ongoing, and no formal charges have been filed.
