Two Californias

Abandoned farms, Third World living conditions, pervasive public assistance -- welcome to the once-thriving Central Valley.

  1. Rose, I saw an advertisement for metal water bottles at the Dollar Store. The fine print said not available in California. We are the only state to my knowledge that tests the Mc Donald's Shrek glasses and water bottles for lead and other toxins. Texas is not that far away for those that want cheap imports that aren't tested for toxins. In fact you could say that there are 49 other states with lower standards.
Since we have to deal with the influx of foreign goods and compete with them, we should have the information necessary to determine the difference between the two.
To do otherwise is to burry our heads in the sand.

  2. In areas of the central valley is looks like snow on the ground from when looking out from the Amtrak in 90 or 100 degree weather. It is salt that has built up on the soil from bad farming practices.
Orchards with drip irrigation seem to be doing well. It's more labor intensive but is more sustainable.
