Submitted by copwatch on Sun, 04/11/2010 - 4:59pm WHY WE PROTESTED AT THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE
On Thursday, April 8, 2010, fifteen to twenty community members gathered in the reception area of the District Attorney's office, fourth floor of the courthouse, to address Paul Gallegos regarding a recent incident and the systematic injustice related to that and many other instances. As you may remember, on March 15th of this year, two people from Redwood Curtain CopWatch were arrested because Sheriff's Deputy Joseph Marsh did not want to be videotaped while he was detaining and searching a man in Eureka.
On April 6, 2010, the two of us who were arrested learned that the DA had not (yet) charged us with any crime related to our arrests. After we were arrested and in jail, we signed Agreements to Appear in court on April 6th. When signing an Agreement to Appear, the document informs the signer that if s/he does not appear on that date, s/he can be arrested again.
On April 6, we were not on the court schedule, which means the DA had not yet decided what charges or if he would charge us at all.
We called the DA's office many times over a 3 week period, emailed him, and had personally delivered a letter regarding the bunk arrest and the holding of our copwatch cameras. Because Paul Gallegos' campaign manager received the (open) letter through an email list and contacted Paul Gallegos with concerns about our cameras, he apparently made a call to the Sheriff's Department so that the cameras would be returned. Gallegos' campaign manager called us at the end of the business day on Wednesday, April 7th; but when Kim Starr went down to the Sheriff's Dept., it was too late to retrieve the cameras.
The next morning, we went and got the cameras and the video footage we had recorded with them- prior to and during our bogus arrests. When we called the DA's office for the umpteenth time and asked if we had been charged with anything, we were told the case was still "pending." Later that afternoon, 15-20 community members were at the DA's office to insist that the DA officially decline to charge the copwatchers who had been arrested. ...
Excuse me again? The CAMPAIGN MANAGER?
WHY WE WERE ARRESTED AT THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE
While we were at the office from about 2pm on, we made clear that we wanted to speak to DA Paul Gallegos. We said we wanted justice. Gallegos never showed. About 10 minutes before the office would close for the day, one of the DA's investigators, James Dawson, walked through the group and, out of anger, shoved our friend's trumpet into his lips and then laid his hands on Kim Starr. Within about 7 minutes after the assaults by Dawson, a bunch of Sheriff's Deputies congregated in the DA's office and arrested each of us who were still there- five of us, and cited our friend with the trumpet....
You mean Verbena, who gets arrested all the time as an excuse to file frivolous junk lawsuits against local governments (which ALWAYS end up dismissed because she's such a dingbat, heck even Tracy Rain (nee Herrin nee DeSutter) won't even represent her anymore)?
Gallegos having her locked up for her usual tedious stupidity and trumped-up confrontations is only bound to gain him votes.
Mmm. The copwatch ftards may have a case if the original arresting deputy was joe marsh. He left epd under a very dark cloud involving ethics violations. And, be very careful when going to the staples store on harris. I was in there last weekend and kim starr was there making a bunch of photocopies, probably for another one of her moronic rallies. So much for not supporting evil corporations, eh, verbena? Those copwatch posting always crack me up. "We were there for 2 hours" hahahaha
All things considered Starr and the D.A.,definitely deserve each other but I think Rose has it right, what the heck is a campaign manager doing in the middle of this? Whose idea was that? If it was the CM, that person needs to be fired. If it was the D.A. well, ditto.
Rose, now you're just getting desperate. Pull yourself together and talk about the issues. Jumping on, and riding hard on every little issue makes you, Rose, into a cheap, tawdry blogger who just needs to focus on cleaning her own act up.
Sounds like you should go bang on Heraldo if you want cheap and tawdry. 6:49.
Kim and her little band of malcontents thrive on conflict and confrontation. The theory seems to be that if they can provoke a response by supreme assoholity, they can legitimize their pathetic little crusade. Sad really. They accomplish nothing except the perverse joy of making themselves victims.
Yes. He is collecting 90 percent of his pay in retirement and an additional 50 percent working half time for the DA after his bid for chief of EPD failed.
Could get interesting unless the ACLU moderators run interference for the incumbent. Per Sohum;
The format of the debate will start with opening statements and an airing of the candidate’s views on five questions posed by the moderator concerning civil liberties issues in Humboldt County. All other questions will be posed by the live audience via notecards, followed by closing statements. Each candidate will have the opportunity to issue rebuttals to the statements of others. The format of the debate will start with opening statements and an airing of the candidate’s views on five questions posed by the moderator concerning civil liberties issues in Humboldt County. Since Paul Gallegos tried to torpedo police review and also prosecuted those young HSU women for riding their bikes and getting attacked by the CHP...I'm not so sure the ACLU is in his hip pocket by a long shot.
Two points-- Lots of dead get honored. Think Memorial Day. Think Hiroshima. Still Dead.
Wouldn't it be an honor for the DA to release the CAST stats for the last decade, from 2000 to 2010? All the stats. Stats are (or were) quite up to the month. Where are they?
They are hidden out of embarrassment. The progam is honored every year for the participants during child abuse and victims month. The thing has been on life support for 4 yrs existing in name only. But what the hek, EPIC doesn't give a crap about kids or victims or anything but their little planet of lawsuits. That's why the advocates and victims are supporting Jackson. We are tired of the excuses and lies.

I just find it interesting that his campaign manager is making calls that he, as D.A., should be making.

ReplyDeleteMakes for a nice little photo op, though. I think they call that the "Rose Garden." (using your office as a campaign tool - check out his website)
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't look very comfortable in the TV spot.
