Global Warming Hits New Orleans

This one is for dred.

Rare Snow Blankets South Louisiana
NEW ORLEANS -- People across south Louisiana called their friends, grabbed their cameras and headed outside this morning to document a rare and wonderful sight: snow.
The last snowfall in the New Orleans area was on Christmas Day in 2004. Before that, 1989 was the last significant snowfall. The sight is so rare that many children were seeing snow for the first time, and adults were seeing it for the first time in years.

  1. Climate is what you expect. Weather is what you get. Snow is not unheard of in the south. Neither are larger, more energized hurricanes that are drawing from increasingly warmer Gulf water.

  2. Right....weather is weather. Take man out of the mix and you still got it. Nothing that is happening regarding weather is unprecedented...so lets quit blaming humans. This is weather...and the extemists are arrogant enough to believe that we can change the weather to suit them. ITS WEATHER!

  3. Weather is weather. Add 6.2 billion humans to the Earth, clear the forests, and release the sequestered carbon from petroleum and coal into the atmosphere - presto change-o - glaciers begin to recede. As the atmosphere warms, melting snow pack, ice fields, glaciers, and sea ice - the surface of the earth warms, permafrost thaws and hundreds of millions of metric tons of trapped carbon dioxide and methane are released into the atmosphere - positively reinforcing its heat trapping ability which warms the earth even more. Weather patterns change, become intensified. Hundred year floods come back to destroy homes three times per decade. Droughts occur with intensity in areas previously exempt. As the atmosphere warms, its water bearing capabilities increase exponentially. High, thin sirrus clouds envelope the Earth trapping more heat - not having the albedo to reflect the sun's energy - it has the ability to capture. Warmer than normal, highly saturated and highly energized air moves from the Gulf of Mexico into tornado ally mixing with cold dry air from the Rocky mountains creating super cells that spawn tornadoes two miles in diameter, taking everything in its path including the sod and a foot of topsoil. Where drought hasn't turned agriculture and grasslands into baron dust bowls, invasive species of insects, once confined to more southern latitudes, invade and colonize farmer's fields, creating shortages, leaving the remainder too precious for the nation's growing segment of out-of-work and homeless, starving poor. The Government, strapped and powerless, the world economy in shambles, its banks failing, and its credit nonexistent - turns away.

Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees. -Revelation

  7. The proper attire for a Warmista is a wool cap pulled over his eyes, with no eyeholes, you understand. :)

Tom, same thing I said to dred earlier - IF you believe that, plan ahead. Start a business that will make you a rich man if what you imagine is true.

  8. Good point, Rose. Tom, figure out how this is going to play out and capitalize on it.

Oh, you can't figure it out either? Neither can I. Hard to tell just what the weather will end up doing.

  9. Actually, maybe it is really human induced "Climate Change"?

  10. 'I think no scurrying will help our cause. Our destined bones will line old gravel pits. Mammoth or saber-tooth or man, there'll be no difference then. Our interglacial summer passes quickly on.'

  11. Well it seems that most global warming-esque stuff that I've read has stated that winters will be more harsh.

  12. As the snow piles up and the glaciers reach San Francisco, they'll still be showing an "Inconvenient Truth" in our classrooms, and the "Climate Change" mantra will still be that the Warming is just around the corner.

  13. Weather events will be more intense.

This interglacial period will slip back into an ice age once the average global temperature rises high enough and long enough to tip the balance. The pendulum swings pretty fast once that happens. The question is what to prepare for. Climatologists are paying a lot of attention to melting fresh water locked in snow pack and ice. Greenland and west Antarctica especially. Whether average global temperatures are caused by the wobble of the Earth's axis, or by its concentric orbit around the sun, or the sun's measurable energy fluctuations, or interacting cycles of all three, one thing is pretty certain - the high northern and southern latitudes will once again be covered in sheets of ice, someday. The transition will not be smooth. Anyone with the ability to imagine can foresee human suffering beyond the scale of anything we have suffered yet. Carbon loading the atmosphere is not going to push back the inevitable. And who knows what viral catastrophe will be unleashed as tropical heat expands north and south. It may be that rising oceans will rise upon long abandoned relics of civilization, whose inhabitants' bones have long since lined gravel pits with the mammoth and the saber-tooth.

  14. Computer imaginings, and speculation about what happened and what might happen is all well and good, dred. Very entertaining. Good for a few bucks for those who are pushing the agenda. Changing the prognosis as the end of the world dates come and go...

It's funny, you got to admit...

Are you turning down your thermostat, too, Dred? Shivering while the growhouse next door sucks up the watts,

Feeling guilty about your 7 mile commute while your buddy sits in 3 hour traffic jams in LA? Oooh, you gotta cut back. Your extra miles will change the world.

  15. I am just one of 6.2 billion people on this earth trying to stay warm and make enough money to survive. The near future holds few promises.

There was an item on CNN the other day about a new clean energy source using water and some form of salt mixture produced by the Black Light Engineering, Co. It has been tested by an independent lab. A power company in New Mexico has signed a contract to build an electric generation plant using this new energy source to power its turbines. They will be able to produce electricity for half the cost and help reduce carbon loading. This is the sort of thing that will help to save the planet in a meaningful way. But I am afraid that cheap energy will not curtail our profligate and wasteful ways, nor will it reduce the number of people inhabiting this planet over the next few generations. Economic growth demanded by our capitalized economy is a cancer that will destroy us eventually. You can't keep too many cows on one pasture without destroying the pasture and the cows.
