ER Earthquake shakes up North Coast

Timely editorial, two days ago - Living on the edge
Humboldt State University geologist Lori Dengler recently delivered the ominous news that Humboldt County is in the midst of the longest period of seismic calm since records have been kept. It's been 14 years since the last earthquake big enough to break windows or topple chimneys.

The fact is we're due for another temblor big enough to rock our world -- literally.

That means now is the time to get ready. Really ready. Earthquake kits should be kept at home, in the car and at work, providing food for three days, water, flashlights, batteries and a change of clothes along with blankets and pet supplies. Check in with the Red Cross for a full list.
Well, this wasn't the "big one!" but the message is worth noting.

as to EarthQuakes, you GOT to have food, water, warm cloths, sleeping bags, ground pads, frist aid kit and shelter - ALL away from your home. (a trailer or at least some 30 gal 'pickle barrels' for storage of the above items. Some camp stove or cook stove also great idea. Enough to last min. a week, though I feel that's way short time looking at our Gov_s responce to Katrina.

Big one hits (Humboldt is over due for a monster one) and we'll be waitiing a while for help from the out side, just like the Katrina victims were (are).

And the more of YOU who are perpaired the less will be asking ME for stuff.

And REMEMBER STORE OUT SIDE YOUR HOME, because if your home falls on it, or burns down around it (gas leaks) all your food and 'stuff' will be gone too! Storage barrels availble at the Re-sale lumber yard between Arcata and Eureka. I picked up a cheapo small camp trailer that I can keep away from my home and filled with survile goodies and such. Earthquake insurance is expencive but would be a good idea, with a big one perdicted in the next 30 years.

  2. Good points, DT. Remember the power outages a few years back - and how fast the store shelves were empty of EVERYTHING! It was amazing.

Every business is supposed to have a disaster plan, but how prepared are we really?

If something really serious were to happen, I wonder how long it would take before the same kind of guys who are out there clearing roads with chainsaws after a big storm will get together and figure out a way to get the pump stations working and some semblance of services restored... that same spirit that built this nation still exists, it is just crushed beneath all the regulations and bureaucracy. One hopes that things like that are already part of the County's disaster plan.

EIGHT MEDALS, DT! This guy is a shining example of why you should NOT drug your boy child with Ridalin, don't you think?

  3. Those damn regulations! Used to be when we was free from bureaucrats and them there regulations, back when freedom wasn't free and, er, and we had to fight them bureaucrats and their damned regulations so we could be free, but, er, then we lost, so now we ain't free no more. Shit! And the spirit that built this nation when we all worked together for a common cause - to feed and cloth our families and make sure our kids were educated so we all could share in the American dream - got down-sized and sent off to some country where if you go on strike for higher wages, the army comes and commences to begin to start to shootin' until everybody agrees what a great country they live in and all go back to work. And then them damned bureaucrats went and deregulated the savings and loan and next thing ya know we aren't even free to own our own homes and had to move in with people who wished that we were free to move somewhere else, but freedom ain't free no more so what ya going to do? The spirit that built this country was born in democracy and sold into slavery by a partnership between those elected to serve us and others paid to serve another master. What master do you serve, Rose?

    ReplyDelete
  5. How's this for english ? No more posting your trollish nonsense , Rose ! Go to another Country and post there . We don't want you . Can you please not post ?

    ReplyDelete
  6. You really need a life, bub. (11:16)

    ReplyDelete
  7. I must disagree m'dear. 920/11:16 is exactly the reason we need to medicate "some" children.

    Putz.

    ReplyDelete
  8. :) Au contraire, I think it is the self-medicating that has led to his unforunate condition. :)

  9. Carol........ if you quit saying mean and nasty stuff about other people then other people won't say mean or nasty things about you . It's hurts other people feelings when your comments put down other people . Be nice to others & they'll be nice to you .

  10. Callin' Rose a "Putz" is uncalled for, howlsatmoon! Interesting name you give yourself, by the way. Must have been a toss up between that and lunatic. You're an expert on the subject of medicating children, no doubt. Had some personal experience and it did you a world of good, too! Well, y'all keep close tabs on who's a regulatin' and who's a deregulatin' and mind you don't be medicatin' any crushed nation buildin' spirits cause the DEA and the CIA, the FBI and the John Birch Society, and even the Revenuers have been askin' questions and takin' names. Just a word to the wise, any bloggin' goin' on about any medicatin goin' on and who knows who might be kickin' your door in.

  11. Polite little fella isn't he, Wollf? I told ya Humboldt County blogging is like knife fighting in close quarters. Must be somethin' in the water.

    Apologize, 11;08.

  12. Sorry if I drew blood, Wolfie. Rose is right, and I shall try to be as kind and good as Rose from this day forward. It shall prove to be an effortless enterprise. Knife fighting in close quarters? Wretched!

  13. Oohhh-hoo-hoo! Which toes have I stepped on this time? Posts have been pretty benign lately... must be somethin' in the comments? Here? Or on heraldo?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh! Get over yourself, girl! And tell the truth - you know you've missed me.

    ReplyDelete
  15. In this, as in so many things, 5:26, you are mistaken.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm crestfallen. You have taken the wind out of my sails. This is the worst day of my life. God! How you have broken my heart, Rose.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Like flattery will get you anywhere. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. It always amazes me Rose....it's always your most benign Posts that bring out the spitters.....

But I am impressed...lil' Buddy goes to nite nite after 2340hrs and is back up and drooling by 0520

    Wollf

  19. You folks are almighty particular about other peoples lack of good manners while completely disregarding your own boorish behavior. Of course drooling is perfectly normal for woofs, so don't take offense, Sir Howlsalot. As Roses fawning puppy, your frequent growling at visitors as they come and go is just a natural territorial instinct. But will you ever stop piddling on the floor with every little excitement?

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's not your manners 2:39, it is your mental acuity that's so entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Actually, there are some people I do miss - theo therme, for example. And there's someone else I haven't heard from in a while, but the name escapes me at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have been wondering about theo therme. He was a boisterous voice. Hope he is ok. And I hope your failing memory isn't a measure of diminishing mental acuity, Rose. A sign that you frequently self-medicate, perhaps? They say it helps one's concentration. Are you in denial? Quick to anger? Abusing alcohol? Hope you have caring people around you.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Rose is jusk A-OK 8:26. Your bad habits and personal weakness isn't the way most people behave. Sorry to have to clue you in on that little bit of reality. Just take one step at a time and you to can function like a human.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Which personal weakness are you referring to?

    ReplyDelete
  25. And please list my bad habits. Self-improvement is my goal. Make suggestions, please.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ahh! It was Tad - he's the other one we hadn't heard from in a while - seems he was having computer problems. But he's back.

    ReplyDelete
  27. "I have been wondering about theo therme. "His" was a boisterous voice."

Especially so during the southern sweep. Do you suppose he had a computer problem, too? Like maybe it was confiscated. Guess they don't make spy ware for that sort of thing.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Actually, I'm pretty sure theo is posting on your progressive post, Rose. You probably shouldn't offer to meet him at the coffee shop if he takes you up on the loan of the tax code.

    ReplyDelete
  29. :) I'd like to meet him.
