The Illinois General Assembly bill, also known as HB 4520, was introduced in January by Rep. Ken Dunkin (D- Chicago), who then insisted: "This legislation is not laughable. On the surface it's like, 'Oh wow, what is this?' But it's becoming more and more of a common problem with people haplessly crossing an intersection and almost killing themselves."
Under the proposed law, Illinois residents would get slapped with a misdemeanor and a $25 fine if caught using a cell phone or other wireless device while traversing streets.

ReplyDeleteFirst, this proposed law only pertains to CROSSING the street, not walking along the sidewalk. While I may agree that the government shouldn't be our Nanny, let's be clear on the details.
Second, this law would codify that a text messaging pedestrian who walks into traffic and gets hurt is at fault. Otherwise the innocent driver is due for a lengthy court battle against a careles nit wit.

Do you need a law to tell you not to walk in front of a moving vehicle? Texting or not? Darwin's law, man.
ReplyDeleteAs an aside, anyone but me notice the latest talking on a cell phone while driving tactic: Hold the phone in your right hand when chatting so it's more difficult to be seen with the phone to your ear?
