Twelve-month long drop in world temperatures wipes out a century of warming

Blog: Science Temperature Monitors Report Widescale Global Cooling
World Temperatures according to the Hadley Center for Climate Prediction. Note the steep drop over the last year.

Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile -- the list goes on and on.

No more than anecdotal evidence, to be sure. But now, that evidence has been supplanted by hard scientific fact. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously.

Thickest, Oldest Artic Ice Is Melting

The thickest, oldest and toughest sea ice around the North Pole is melting, a bad sign for the future of the Arctic ice cap, NASA satellite data showed on Tuesday.

"Thickness is an indicator of long-term health of sea ice, and that's not looking good at the momen," Walt Meier of the National Snow and Ice Data Center told reporters in a telephone briefing.

This adds to the litany of disturbing news about Arctic sea ice, which has been retreating over the last three decades, especially last year, when it ebbed to its lowest level.

Scientists have said that the trend is spurred by human-generated climate change....

    http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2004/05mar_article.htm

Global warming could plunge North America and Western Europe into a deep freeze, possibly within only a few decades.

That's the paradoxical scenario gaining credibility among many climate scientists. The thawing of the sea ice covering the Arctic could disturb or even halt large currents in the Atlantic Ocean. Without the vast heat that these ocean currents deliver--comparable to the power generation of a million nuclear power plants--Europes average temperature would likely drop 5 to 10 degrees C (9 to 18 degrees F) and parts of Eastern North America would be chilled somewhat less. Such a dip in temperature would be similar to global average temperatures toward the end of the last ice age roughly 20,000 years ago...

    SO

Melting Arctic ice will decrease the temperatures in North America and Europe. It seems possible that melting North Pole ice will cause decreased temperatures in other areas. The melting ice is caused by "global warming."

Which is exactly what we are seeing.

The term global warming confuses people into thinking that if things get colder in some places that it cancels out global warming. A more accurate term is climate change.

  4. So, the ice is melting? Is it that SUV you're driving? Or is it earth's magma?

Interesting stuff - some good links - something to add into your thought processes: COLUMBUS , Ohio -- Scientists have discovered what they think may be another reason why Greenland 's ice is melting: a thin spot in Earth's crust is enabling underground magma to heat the ice.

They have found at least one “hotspot” in the northeast corner of Greenland -- just below a site where an ice stream was recently discovered.

The researchers don't yet know how warm the hotspot is. But if it is warm enough to melt the ice above it even a little, it could be lubricating the base of the ice sheet and enabling the ice to slide more rapidly out to sea....

...The ice sheet in northeast Greenland is especially worrisome to scientists. It had no known ice streams until 1991, when satellites spied one for the first time. Dubbed the Northeastern Greenland Ice Stream, it carries ice nearly 400 miles, from the deepest interior of the island out to the Greenland Sea.

“Ice streams have to have some reason for being there. And it's pretty surprising to suddenly see one in the middle of an ice sheet,” von Frese said.

The newly discovered hotspot is just below the ice stream, and could have caused it to form, the researchers concluded. But what caused the hotspot to form?

“It could be that there's a volcano down there,” he said. “But we think it's probably just the way the heat is being distributed by the rock topography at the base of the ice.”

  5. Nevermind. I can see why this blog is out here in far right blog world with no visitors. I felt sorry for you but you seem to love your miserable state so I won't be back to stir up your cognitive dissonance any more either.

    Seek help.

  6. 4:30,you seem to be the one upset and showing overt cognitive dissonance. I say that respectfully because I am concerned about global climate changes and it effects on all life. I am happy to look at both sides because I don't believe all the data is ever in. Just saying ,why can't you just share info back and forth?

  7. the data will never be in. the earth is over 3 billion years old, yet humans invented the thermometer just two hundred years ago. we have about .0000000000001% of geologic time on record.

the atmoshphere contained 100x the amount of greenhouse gases before flowering plants evolved, yet scientists have very little idea what the climate was like at the time.

the earth is bigm humans are small. the only big thing about humans are egos. we think that we control the earth. did religion give us that notion?

  8. Where in the world is Al Gore???? He's been very quiet since winter struck.

  9. Tom: "did religion give us that notion?"
Yes. Specifically the warmista sect of the Environazi religion.
May we expect the opening of a booth at NEC dedicated to "Save The Old Growth (Ice)"? Do we send our deductible contributions to Mark Lovelace's 501 (c) 3 scam?

  10. we think that we control the earth. did religion give us that notion?

I kinda figured it was all that LSD - but maybe it's the flouride...

As for AlGore, I think once he got his Carbon Banks assured he was set for life, having pulled one over on all the politicians, even Arnold, what a disappointment. We'll be paying the price for the warmistas (love that word, λεονιδας ) religious fervor for a long time.

  11. "Warmistas" make me hungry. Read the data 4:30 without an imaginative handle, not the ill informed, 2 year degreed "Communication" majors News reports.

λεονιδας, drop me a line if you are going to be South of Santa Barbara.....I'll even try to fly the "Lady" out for dinner.

    Oops, sorry, gotta write.

  12. Speaking of below average temperatures, I've been wondering about Eureka and the rest of the county. I'd almost bet it's been colder than normal in Eureka this year. Wouldn't be surprised it it might be some kind of record.

I'm not saying we had record cold temperatures, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out we had a record number of nights under 40 degrees.

But maybe it just seems colder as I get older? Or maybe I just never paid as much attention to how often it dips into the 30s here? I don't think Eureka went into the 20s this winter.

  13. As someone that was here at the time, I can tell you that the 30's were cold. In Garberville we had to drive up the frozen river many times to get home as the road was not passable. We didn't have all the computers then or we would have probably given up as you young folks seem to want to do today,

  15. Just don't drop one of those wonderful light Bulbs (?).. you know those ugly spere looking things that all of us will have to use by 2018. Seems as if they are full of mercury and toxic as hell. Global warming is the biggest hoax of the day!
