Election coverage

Thank you to KHSU: 90.5 f.m., (Elizabeth, Hank Sims and Mike) and Captain Buhne for the play by play election coverage. You were a better source of information than the County election site and Ch. 3. by a long shot.

  1. KHSU was great, except they sometimes got too caught up in blabber when there were available updates being aired on KHUM. As I was driving home I kept switching back and forth between them and KGOE which was fixed on state and national issues.

  2. It was great - and it reminds me of the way Channel 3 and channel 6 used to cover the elections years ago. Interviews, live updates, dedicated coverage... real energy and excitement. It's one more thing the lack of competition robs us of.

Hearing from all of the candidates and people from both sides of the aisle was - well - worth the time.

KINS had some good coverage during their Talk Shop hour, don't know if it went on later because they aren't online.

Too true. The KHSU studio, it turns out, it super tech-deficient. I had my laptop fired up and ready to go in the studio -- but no Internet connection!

We had to rely on the program producers (who were busy handling a zillion other things) to refresh the elections page on their machine, then print out the pages on a slow ink-jet printer, then hand them to us in the studio -- usually at a time when Elizabeth was interviewing someone else.

It was a lot of fun, though.

  6. It was fun. Internet connection for laptop in room was badly needed. I was suprised how quick the time went by.

    Some other notes:
    1. Sheriff race in Mendo had Allman winning with his stance much softer on Marijuana than his opponent...a Partain relative.

  7. Wait -- Allman is the Partain relative, or Broin?

  8. I just talked to Jerry. Tom Allman is Partain's nephew. I talked to both of them at a debate in Willits in May. I'm sure Allman did well Willits north and the Fort Bragg coast. Broin is a Ukiah guy who was appointed as Sheriff. Initially he was not planning to run, but chose to do so after he took office early this year. This is what I understand.

The soft on pot thing works in Northern Mendo and Southern Humboldt for GOPer/lib types. There are four I know of: Allman,(Norm Vroman), Rodoni, and John Pinches.

  9. Allman's predecessor, Tony Craver, too.

It seemed to me that Allman was popular at the grassroots in Willits/Laytonvile and on the coast, and not just among the counterculture types. My stepdad, a retired trucker, was all for him in a big way, and well before the primary.

I never got a sense for Broin, except that he seemed to be the choice of the Ukiah establishment.

  10. Willits/Laytonville = Marijuana in a BIG way. BIG time.

Allman is related to Partain. Doesn't make him like Partian though.

So? Am I supposed to be surprised?

I grew up there. It's normal.

You might as well say "Kentucky? That's moonshine country in a BIG way. BIG time."

  12. One other interesting thing about Mendo is that I read (I believe in late April or May) in either the Willits News or the Journal that 65% of the voters were mail ballots only. They converted several precincts to mail ballot only (absentee style) starting in the June primary.

I'm speculating but I would guess that it had to do with their old voting systems and their ability to comply with HAVA requirements.

  13. Hey Hank maybe you should go back there! You've got the attitude of a big time grower from Laytonville. You're starting to remind me of Eric V. Kirk! But you probably think that's a compliment.

  14. 11:26 - leave Hank alone....

Hank - really? - please rethink this one.

    sigh...

  15. Rethink what? I don't get it.

  16. Yougofree.com also has a "vacation" home in Willits. Hmmmm....

  17. Hank - you ask rethink what?

  18. Eric is smart, open-minded and kind. On my best days, I'm maybe two out of three. Why wouldn't it be a compliment?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Gee Hank, he may be kind, but he just isn't smart and far from open minded.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Eric is nowhere near open minded. I think he sometimes tries to appear that way but is hypocritical/contradictory (saying nice things about Arkleys, and then going to Larry Glass's campaign headquarters is an example), but he unflinching support of certain individuals in the face damning evidence does not bear out open mindedness.

His lack of knowledge of many areas of the law, coupled with extreme hubris about his knowledge of the law does not make him intelligent. A truly intelligent person knows how much they do not know.

Compassionate...maybe, but it seems to be geared towards those who agree with him, those he supports politically and those who are like minded.

Hank, I would believe your rendition of the facts and subsequent opinion everyday over Eric, who I have determined is a zealot with limited critical thinking or logical reasoning abilities.

  21. Wow, 445,

I think my politics are pretty much to the Right of Erics, but we've spoken on the phone regarding some mutual interests/family things (adoption), and really, I think he's a nice guy. I dont we all have to be mutually exclusive, i.e. I think its ok to say nice things about the arkleys AND support Larry Glass.
He's also taken a lot of flack from those to the left for daring to meet with Brian Morrisey of SN, as if that is some sort of betrayal of their cause.

    Anyway, just my .02,
    Paul

  22. 4:45 -- Thanks for the compliment, and I do appreciate it, but I'm with Paul on the Is-Eric-Evil? question.

  23. Eric is not evil. But he is extremely arrogant, smug, and annoying. Did I leave out hypocritical?

And Hank, good ariticle on the Burgess story. It was the most balanced yet.

And now for the rest of the story ....... Eric is not smart and he certainly is not open minded. Eric acts like he's bright but it's just an act (and he knows it's an act), that's why the elitist attitude and everything that goes with it. Every once in awhile Eric says something that makes me think he's an OK guy, but it doesn't take long for me to see through, I'm not saying he's bad like he runs over cats and abuses children. I do think Eric is a good parent and would probalby not run over cats.

Eric is average, but trying soooo hard not to be.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I like cats! I've never run over one to my knowledge. I did run over a possum once though. Not purposely - honest!

  25. 4:45 - Can I use that post for my resume?

  26. Sure Erwic, it fits.

  27. Are you kidding us Rose? Hank Sims was nothing but gawd awful. Totally hopelessly biased with no attmept to get an opinion from anyone who isn't a Rep or Dem.
